56. The teenager Jarod invites his best friends Travis and Billy-Ray to have a foursome with a thirty-eight year-old woman. While driving to meet the woman, Travis hit a car parked on the road. When they meet the woman, she gives spiked beer to them and they pass out. When the three friends wake up, they find that they are trapped in the fundamentalist Five Points Trinity Church of the infamous Pastor Abin Cooper and that they will be killed. Meanwhile the church is under siege by ATF agents led by Agent Joseph Keenan that have been ordered to destroy the terrorist cell. Will the teenagers be saved by the agents of the law enforcement agency?
 57. Set in Middle America, a group of teens receive an online invitation for sex, though they soon encounter fundamentalists with a much more sinister agenda.
 58. Red State represents Kevin Smith's attempt to direct a horror movie / thriller, focusing on a Phelps-like family of violent religious fanatics. It follows three male college students entrapped by the religious fanatics via an internet relationship site. Although the film features some good characterization and acting by Michael Parks and Melissa Leo, dubious pacing, weak writing, and the lack of a good protagonist undermine it.

Red State suffers from an inability to retain a consistent tone, as it shifts from a buddy comedy to a disturbing horror film to an action movie, and then back to some rather lame laughs. Given that Smith's stated goal was to direct a horror movie, this is a serious flaw. There are only two scenes in the film that could truly qualify as frightening, and they are both undermined by lousy pacing, as too much time is spent watching the main villain talk.

Furthermore, we are never given a clear character to root for,as the film's attention shifts too frequently for anyone other than the villains to stand out. The film divides its attention between the three captives so evenly that none really becomes the lead. (It doesn't help that they are played by unexceptional actors.) The film then shifts to a federal agent played by John Goodman, yet the film can't seem to make up its mind whether he is supposed to be a protagonist or an antagonist.

In the end, only the two main villains played by Michael Parks and Melissa Leo really stand out as interesting characters. Parks gives the lead minister / fanatic a charismatic edge, making it clear why people would follow someone so obviously insane. Leo isn't given as much to work with, but still makes her character compelling. Their performances, along with a somewhat amusing plot twist near the end, are the only things keeping the film from a lower score.
 59. I was blown away by this movie. I hadn't heard of it until the other day, when I found myself scrolling through some lame Top 10 Films Tarantino Wishes He Could Have Directed or something equally as click-bait-y. But Tarantino did comment on this film in particular, highly favourably--and a film doesn't get a better recommendation than that, really. So I had a certain amount of expectation, but it was surpassed. I am a bit of a film addict, so when I say this movie blew me away, I mean it. I'm not going to bother blurbing the film or anything because that is 80% of the other reviews already, but for those of you interested in a random bloke's 2p, this film felt real to me. The acting never felt like acting and I was placed right in the middle of the conflict, literally jumping from moment to moment. John Goodman is ALWAYS a good guy to have in a film, but all of the others really held their own too. I think it would be easy to pass the film off as perhaps being a bit "confused" or "garbled" but those descriptions only go as far as describing how much of the film some viewers were able to individually take from it or maybe their Online- University-Major-In-Film-Critiquing egos that tell them all films have to follow a basic formula of arch and character development... Whatever. Regardless, I thought the film was an unforgettable thriller with snappy writing, a terrific script, memorable performances and a truly engrossing and amusing balance of poignant reality, overwhelming brutality, and powerful dialogue--with a delightful element of humour and not-taking-itself-too-seriously. It is immediately up there with some of my favourite thrillers and is therefore obviously recommended. ...I had no intention or writing a review but it was that good.
 60. For all its boisterous profanity and splattery violence, the film is more of a weary sigh than a sputtering volley of indignation.
 61. Although it was initially suspected that it would be a slasher film, it is actually more like an action thriller. The horror is derived from real life hatred and the violence that people are capable of committing. Also unlike most slasher films, all violence and death in Red State is done with firearms. The movie however does feature numerous horror genre tropes where comparisons can be made between it and The Devil's Rejects and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. It is not based on an actual story but is inspired but various real life events. The villain is a composite of Fred Phelps, Jim Jones and other leaders of religious cults. The events of the story are also quite similar to the Branch Davidian tragedy in Waco, Texas. During the shootout with the ATF and Five Points Church, the congregation's children are hidden in the attic. Later the teenage church member Cheyenne tells them to escape out the back and they are not seen in the film again. During many of Kevin Smith's Q&A appearances for the film he has said that if you listen to the background audio there is the sound of children screaming in the distance soon after the scene when Cheyenne and Jared are killed. Smith said he intentionally chose not to reveal the exact fate of the children. Kevin Smith's first drafted ending for Red State was to have the climactic shootout at the church end when the true apocalypse begins: Trumpet blasts herald from the sky which turns blood red and is filled with angels, one of which impales Pastor Cooper with a flaming sword. Given the film's $5,000 special effects budget this ending was logistically impossible yet elements of it inspired the film's final ending. No. This movie is a stand alone story. It does not contain (ex: Jay and Silent Bob) any characters or overt references to previous Kevin Smith films. a5c7b9f00b
