  146. sites. rockets. supporting systems and facilities. and rnanv
  147. of the German scientists who had developed these and
  148. other special '.'.eapons svsrerns. \X'ith the acquisition of
  149. these facilities. the weapons themselves. and the scientists
  150. and engineers who had developed them. the USSR
  151. quicklv acquired the nucleus of its own missile program,
  152. First used agai nsr London in June 1944. the V-I was
  153. an effective weapon svstern. It inflicted severe damage
  154. and casualties on Great Britain. and particularly London.
  155. in the latter pan 0 f the war. at the same time significantly
  156. curtailing war-time production in the London area. It also
  157. posed a serious problem [0- the Allied invasion of Europe.
  158. The Allies found it necessary to place high priorities on
  159. countering this threat, diverting aircraft from support of
  160. their invading armies to attacks on V-I sites and
  161. supporting facilities. The V-1- and the V-2-were
  162. also used effectively against cities and port facilities on the
  163. continent after liberation by Allied forces. Antwerp. in
  164. particular. suffered severe damage from massive attacks
  165. by these missiles. and the V-I in particular.
