Being a true pacifist who believes that war should be a thing of the past I have a morbid fascination of war movies.<br/><br/>A good war movie is one that makes you see and understand the utter folly of war. Hyena Road is a perfect example of a good war movie.<br/><br/>The futility of war and in this case of the crazy undefined one that has been raging in Afghanistan for decades.<br/><br/>The story line is solid, the characters are real people. Rossif Sutherland as Ryan Sanders the patriot who believes that in war there are good and bad people. Paul Gross as Pete Mitchell the cynical intelligence officer that believes that he knows what needs to be done, and who has dissected war as a conflict of interests by many parties.<br/><br/>The friction of the impossible situation the characters are in is well presented by all the cast.<br/><br/>The slight romantic sub story is just another facet of the stupid mad situation all the characters are in.<br/><br/>The photography is vivid and true and the movie moves at just the right pace between the basic humanity of all the characters and the very well made realistic scenes of combat.<br/><br/>All in all an excellent film that stands true against most of the American war movies of recent years that are only propaganda. Here the point that war is senseless and only inflicts harm directly on the people or indirectly on the society of all involved.<br/><br/>Undoubtetly a pearl of Canadian Film.
  57. This is excellent film about modern warfare with convincing battle scenes, ramped up tension and incredible locations. Who are the good guys? Who are the bad guys? Very hard to tell in Afghanistan as Canadian soldiers do their duty, to little effect. In my view it is a superior film to the much hyped American Sniper. The performances were all very convincing and Paul Gross&#39;s direction was swift and to the point. The atmosphere of working in a very foreign land for the Canadian soldiers is very apparent. I found I cared about what they were doing, as I was frankly trying to figure out their mission. If you enjoyed films like Zero Dark Thirty or The Hurt Locker, you should see this film.
  58. This is the kind of movie where a major development in a character’s personal life instantly telegraphs his ultimate fate in the trenches.
