  3. ===============
  4.
  5. Most of my efforts for the next few months will be focused on the SNES Penthathlon (aka, Aweglib's Patented Penta-hundo-athalon (tm)).
  6.
  7. For those who don't know, this is a run (invented by Aweglib) in which you play through each of the following games with 100% completion:
  8.
  9. Super Mario World
  10. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
  11. Super Metroid
  12. Mega Man X
  13. Donkey Kong Country
  14.

  16. FAQ:
  17. ================
  18. ----------------
  19. Why these games?
  20. ----------------
  21. Well, in a sense, they're the defining games of the Super Nintendo. Though there are certainly a lot of other fantastic games on the console (arguably more for this console than any other ever or forever), these ones really capture the true spirit of what made the console so great. If you grew up with SNES, you probably grew up with these games. Though leaving off games like Final Fantasy VI or Super Mario RPG certainly stops us from capturing everything that made SNES so great, these ones are targeted to capture a few different types of gameplay, but also still be completed in a reasonable amount of time. (ok yeah there's also Earthbound, and Chrono Trigger, and Street Fighter II, and Yoshi's Island, and a billion other things... just go do an SNES Classic run already!)
  22.
  23. -----------------------------------------------------
  24. Why 100%? Wouldn't it be faster to just do any% runs?
  25. -----------------------------------------------------
  26. Well, yes, it would be faster. And I suppose there could be a variant of this where you do indeed do that. But we're trying to celebreate Super Nintendo here. And trying to get everything in these games just presents a more complete picture. It lets us see everything these games have to their fullest potential, and, really, when playing these through casually, you just *had* to try to get 100%! I view it as a re-living of what made childhood games great. And that was getting 100%.
  27.
  28. ----------------------------------------------------
  29. Aren't some of these games worse than their sequels?
  30. ----------------------------------------------------
  31. Yeah, that's true. Diddy's Kong Quest is better than Donkey Kong Country in almost every way. And as great as Mega Man X is, X2's speedrun might be one of the best runs out there. Those games could easily take the place of the ones on the list, and the Pentathlon would certainly be more entertaining for it. But again, we're trying to capture the spirit of the console. And starting with the games that kicked off those series just *feels* right, as a tribute. And it's not like any of these are *bad* runs - they're still very challenging and entertaining games! (come on everything's completely subjective here this is what we want to do ok)
  32.
  33. --------------------
  34. What are your goals?
  35. --------------------
  36. I'm not looking to get to an elite tier at any of those games (though, arguably, I'm already there for DKC 101%). I'm just looking to get relatively competent. I want to be able to execute most of the critical speed tech in each game, though not necessarily any small optimizations, and to be able to play through each relatively competently and consistently. This would be a very long run, so I don't want to be super likely to have a complete disaster early in the run. That said, I think I'll be shooting for:
  37.
  38. Super Mario World - 96 Exit - under 2 hours (current PB: none - I don't have any runs done for this game)
  39. Link to the Past - 100% - under 2 hours (current PB: none - any% time is currently 2:20:08, but should fall quickly)
  40. Super Metroid - 100% - under 1:45 (current PB: 1:46:20)
  41. Mega Man X - 100% - under 50 minutes (current PB: 1:14:08)
  42. Donkey Kong Country - 101% - under 50 minutes (oh man I was doing this consistently just a few weeks ago now it sounds impossible)
  43.
  44. Basically under 8 hours for the whole thing.
  45.
  46. ------------------------------
  47. When are you going to do this?
  48. ------------------------------
  49. Probably never. The longest run I've ever done is the DKC Trilogy 306% run, which is around 5 hours. SMRPG comes in at about 3. So for me to actually pull 8-9 hours out of a day to play video games sounds impossible. I'd have to get some mega blessing from my wife to do it, since she'd have to take care of our billion kids for the whole day. Plus it's going to take me forever to be able to hit all those goals above consistently at once. Just learning LTTP and SMW will take forever. De-rusting Super Metroid will be impossible. Mega Man X will be fun, but who knows. And I'm still burnt out on DKC. So y e a......
  50.
  51. (Glib and Mr. Cab said they were shooting for December, so I may not participate until a second round - or may just do it on my own and not as a race)
  52.
  53. -----------------------------------------------------
  54. What about all those other games you said you'd play?
  55. -----------------------------------------------------
  56. I know, I know. I said I'd learn all the NES Mega Man games. And I still really, really want to do that (an all-6 run sounds amazing). I also said I'd learn Banjo-Kazooie (and I still really, really want to do THAT!) I said I'd go for SMRPG sub-3 (and I probably will still do that, as the mood strikes - but I'm more excited about the Penta-hundo-athalon right now). And I said I'd play Donkey Kong Country games only and forever until I was elite (hahahahahahahahhahahahahaha). And didn't I buy Aladdin for the 12-hour challenge? (yes) And I said I'd play through all the Final Fantasy games on stream (still hoping to!)....
  57.
  58. Ok you get the picture. Cut me some slack! I'm excited about this right now!
  59.
  60. --------------------
  61. So? What's the plan?
  62. --------------------
  63. Working on Link to the Past right now and really, really enjoying it. I'm going to do another couple NMG runs, and then switch to Hundo (doesn't seem like there's too much to add for that).
  64.
  65. But I'm already starting to get the itch to think about SMW. Was expecting that to be the one I would least enjoy, so the fact that I'm already starting to feel excited about it is kind of cool.
  66.
  67. Likely Mega Man X will be next, as I'm least practiced at it. And then eventually I'll go back and work on Super Metroid. Who knows about DKC.
  68.
  69. But what I think I *will* do is finally buy an SNES Everdrive. There are really, really good practice hacks for Zelda, SMW, and Metroid, so I want to finally take advantage of those. (Is there one for Mega Man X?)
  70.

  72.
  73. Anyways, that's about it! I hope you all have as much fun watching my journey as I hope to have getting there!
