- Message for families
- 1/24/2025
- Dear families,
- Because we have received concerns about recent legislation and executive orders impacting children, we want to take a moment to remind all stakeholders that Chandler Unified remains committed to protecting the safety & rights of our students. Our priority is and always will be to care for and educate every student enrolled in our schools. However, we understand that with change comes uncertainty; so, we are sharing our process as it relates to new legislation and executive orders pertaining to immigration.
- Every time there is new legislation from the state or federal level, legal guidance is used to review the legislation to ensure our policies comply. We continue to follow the laws and policies that guide the operations of our schools. Therefore, our process has not changed for educating students that are enrolled in our schools. Below are a few points of emphasis that guide our schools’ operations.
- Immigration status does not factor into school enrollment. The Plyler v. Doe Supreme Court case established that all children, regardless of immigration status, have the right to free public education.
- For school enrollment, residency has nothing to do with a student’s immigration status. It only refers to where a student physically lives.
- School staff will not inquire or collect information or records about a student’s immigration status or that of their family members.
- We follow FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) guidelines which means school districts and staff are required to maintain the confidentiality of all personally identifiable information in education records related to students.
- Non-school agencies require proper legal documentation or parent permission to obtain access to students or student records.
- If school staff learn that a student’s parents or legal guardians are impacted, we have practices in place that focus on the student’s wellbeing.
- The District shall abide by all applicable state and federal laws, rules, regulations, and executive orders with respect to the provision of equal educational opportunities and shall not discriminate against any person based upon that person's race, color, religion, disability, pregnancy and parenting, sex, national origin, veteran's status, or political affiliation. Any reports of discrimination or harassment based on race, color, or national origin should be immediately reported.
- We encourage all families to update & maintain accurate contact information in our school information system (Infinite Campus). Additionally, CUSD partners with many local organizations and groups to provide resources for our families. Click here to access information on resources. Click here for Spanish.
- Chandler Unified School District has over a century of tradition and excellence in meeting the needs of our students and families. On CUSD campuses each child deserves to be treated with respect & kindness regardless of background. By working together, CUSD can remain a safe place, provide excellence in teaching and learning, and provide opportunities for all students.
- Sincerely,
- Chandler Unified School District
