  1. Cloud Providers - high availability
  2. It is very common nowadays every provider or re-seller to offer "Cloud" VMs. In reality, most of these are plain VPS hosted on single node servers with local storage. Thus we cannot call them cloud.
  3. I would like your opinions on this subject. Who are the few real Cloud providers offering real High Availability with clustered nodes, SANs and so on?

  15. The truth is, even Cloud HA not using single node server or local storage can have issues too, especially with Shared/Reseller hosting as there are way too many single points of failure.
  16.
  17. No provider can guarantee 100% monthly uptime. Sure, if they have downtime, they can provide a small credit, but that doesn't change the fact the service was affected.
  18.
  19. Even Amazon, Microsft and Google have had downtime, and you can imagine how many customers that affected.
  20.
  21. A lot of providers aim for 100% and some months or several months at a time it is possible if lucky, but 100% forever. Just not possible no matter how fancy someone says the setup is.

  25. Hey Chris,
  26.
  27. Totally agree with you.
  28.
  29. My post here was made:
  30. 1. to depict the situation
  31. 2. and most important, to make a list of providers (if any), that have implement proper High Availability solutions.
  32.
  33. If you want a good cloud, look for a managed private cloud that will have multiple servers / storage and load balancing for your projects only.

  48. as I said i'm trying to find providers that have implement proper HA.
  49.
  50. Looking mainly for providers that can support multiple database and application VMs either windows or linux based.
  51.
  52. The google cloud platform has some of the best HA available. The VMs move around between nodes seamlessly and only reason you even know it would be you are looking at stackdriver status. No rebooting of VM, no slowdowns etc. Azure you will see downtimes when they do such maintenance, or network blips for a few minutes. AWS as well on some of the VM level changes.
  53.
  54. Availability dragon
  55. Very true but don't get caught up chasing the 'availability dragon'.
  56.
  57. At the end of the day all most businesses need is a network that's redundant on all levels to minimize points of failure, with automated minutely incremental cloud backup (Acronis, Veeam) and a fast re-deploy plan.
  58.
  59. It seems the likes of DO/Vultr have stolen the market for cheap dev boxes so other hosts are turning to the HA market. Many hosts are full of sh*t, others build cheap HA networks and others just do it right. Cyberhostpro is an example of a host who has just invested in a top quality network for their business vps (fully redundant with network level ddos mitigation). There are numerous other UK hosts I see trying to do the same thing.
  60.
  61. There are some emerging cost-effective VMWare/Zerto solutions which will launch your instance on another data centre upon detection of VM failure. This solution is hard to beat if you desperately need up-time at affordable prices. Check out Krypt Cloud Replication (USA) or Zettagrid (AUS) or VMHosts (UK). It will be interesting to watch as these solution becomes more accessible. Typically Zerto is an enterprise solution. With Krypt you will pay $50+ USD for the Zerto license per VM, $45 for IP/Firewall + your instance resource costs ~a minimum of $150 USD for a small replicated instance (2cpu 2gb 20gb). Anyone here know of similar affordable Zerto solutions?
  62.
  63. All the major cloud providers have High Availability built in you just need to set it up.
  64. Microsoft Azure as an example has both load balanced environments as an option as well as auto scaling.
  65. But all those providers are self managed meaning that you need to either find a partner to configure the environment or configure it yourself.
  66. As an example in Sydney a few years ago Amazon Web Services lost power to an entire Datacenter but all the Australian services that I checked using AWS with multiple servers were unaffected by the outage.

  71. I think all big cloud like AWS/GCE/Azure are cloud in the true sense of it. But you need to design your infrastructure using the components provided by the cloud to make it scalable and High Available on the Application layer .Then you need proper monitoring and preventive maintenance in place for the service to be kept in good shape.

  76.
  77. Just on the monitoring side of things, they all provide monitoring and maintanance tools as well, plus you can actually mix and match between Cloud providers.
  78. So you could serve your website using Amazon Web Services but use Office365 for the email and stick Akamai in front of the web server or the load balancer to act as a CDN and for DDoS protection.

  83. If your datacenter gets taken out by a meteor (or maybe even an AI attack ) and all your redundant technology and failover is burning up because what you call "Highly Available" consists of a single datacenter, fault tolerant, virtualization contained crap shoot, then you must not have been HA after all.
  84.
  85. The new Terminator movie is coming out soon... If the machines come and take out your side of the country, are you still gonna be able to serve your customers their data? Does business stop because one part of the world is in disarray?
  86.
  87. The world goes round and round with plenty of places in disarray. But business is as usual. A true cloud provider would do just that. Keep business as usual.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...2ff68926f5.jpg

  91. @itqs If you need to use High Availability, I would suggest you to choose any VMware VSPP. High Availability (HA) works without any issues in any VMware powered infrastructures. If there is a downtime on the physical host or on the Virtual Machine the HA restarts the server. However, it works on an OS level only. If any application stopped functioning properly, but the OS is up an running then the HA scenario does not work.

  100. Haven't yet seen HA being offered in the shared hosting (aka, cloud) market by any provider. You might need to go for a custom setup.
