Before long, a girl in a red dress and red gloves arrived.

“Stay away from my master!” she shouted, throwing the knife in her hand.

There’s no way that’ll work. That was the first thing Ryousuke thought, but he soon realized that something was wrong. She had thrown the knife. When it came to Yogiri, even that much should have been impossible. She should have died the moment she moved to do it. That was supposed to be the rule. But Yogiri was standing upright and staring at her, doing nothing to stop the attack.

“Takatou, what are you doing?!” the girl beside him cried, panicking as she grabbed the knife out of the air at the last second.

Ryousuke found himself frozen at the unbelievable sight. What had happened? Why had the boy’s automatic defenses failed?

“Oh, sorry. I was just surprised. Enju, switch to Administrator Command Mode.” As he spoke, Yogiri stepped closer to the android.

Enju. That was the code name of the robot girl. How could he have known that, to say nothing of his activation of the Administrator Command Mode? Ryousuke knew that trick, of course, but it shouldn’t have been usable for anyone but the Administrator himself.

“Deactivate.” At Yogiri’s words, the android slumped to the ground. He grabbed her as she fell, laying her down gently.

“That’s fair. But why does one of them look like your friend?”

“There are a number of people I don't want to kill. Enju is one of them. So someone made robots that look like her for the sole purpose of attacking me. It’s a pretty straightforward plan, don’t you think?”

Tomochika remembered that Yogiri hadn’t used his power to stop the attack. Normally, he would automatically kill anyone or anything who decided to attack him.

“Wait, isn’t that, like...really bad?! I thought you responded automatically to killing intent.”

“If I reacted automatically to killing intent, I couldn’t deal with situations where someone I didn't want to kill was brainwashed to attack me, right?”

やがて、 赤い ドレス に 赤い 手袋 を し た、 人間 にしか 見え ない 人形 が 到着 し た。 「マスター から 離れろ！」 　 人形 が 手 に し て い た ナイフ を 投擲 する。 　 そんな 程度 が 通用 する か。 そう 思う 良介 だ が、 その 光景 に 違和感 を 覚え た。 　 人形 が ナイフ を 投げ た。 それ は、 夜霧 を 前 に し て ありえる 状況 だ とは 思え なかっ た の だ。 　 投げよ う と し た なら 即座 に 死ぬ。 それ が ルール だっ た はず だ。 なのに、 高遠 夜霧 は 棒立ち で 人形 を 見つめ、 ナイフ が 到達 しよ う とも 何 も せ ず、 隣 の 少女 が 慌て て ナイフ を 摑 み 取っ た の だ。 「高遠 くん！」 　 少女 は 狼狽 し て い た。 良介 も あり え ない 光景 に 固まっ た。 　 どういう こと なのか。 今、 自動 反撃 は 発動 し て い なかっ た のでは ない か。 「ああ、 ごめん。 ちょっと 驚い て た。 槐、 管理者 コマンド モード に 移行」 　 そう 言い ながら、 夜霧 が 人形 に 近づい て いく。 　 槐。 それ は この 人形 が 持つ 本来 の コードネーム だ。 　 それ を 何故か 夜霧 が 知っ て い て、 管理者 コマンド なる もの まで 知っ て いる。 それ が ある こと は 良介 も 知っ ては い た が、 それ は 管理者 権限 を 持つ 者 にしか 使え ない はず なの だ。 「停止 しろ」 　 夜霧 が 言う と、 人形 が 力 を なくし て 倒れ て いく。 夜霧 は そっと 人形 を 抱き 抱え、 地面 に 横たえ た。

「は ー。 そう な ん だ…… けど、 その 友達 そっくり の ロボット ってな ん な わけ？」 「俺 には 何人 か 殺し たく ない 人間 が いる ん だ よ。 槐 は その 内 の 一人 な ん だ。 だから、 槐 の 姿 を し た ロボット に 俺 を 襲わ せる。 実に わかり やすい 計画 だろ？」 　 知 千 佳 は、 夜霧 が 槐 に対して 即死 の 力 を 使っ て い なかっ た こと を 思い出し た。 普段 なら、 攻撃 さ れれ ば 自動的 に 反撃 し て いる はず だ。 「え？ 　 まずい じゃん それ！ 　 殺意 に 勝手 に 反応 する もん だ とばかり 思っ て た ん だ けど」 「殺意 に 自動的 に 反応 し て たら さ、 殺し たく ない 相手 が 洗脳 さ れ て 襲いかかっ て き た、 なんて 場合 に 対応 でき ない だろ」
