Born in Japan, with no father in the picture, she was brought up by her mother who taught her everything she knows. She grew up being teased for not having a father and being a odd child. She was content with her life together with her mother and she just have a feeling that she is different from the other kids. At first she thought she is a genius of some sort or even a child who needs extra help, that is until her father show up unknowingly.

Her father was special like her and had powers, knowing that his daughter has an unknown power, he planned to take her with him. He used his power against her, hoping to see what she could do to defend herself, which was blocking his power. After finding out his daughter's power, which he deemed as useless, he left them for good. While her mother took this opportunity to go to Korea, one, hoping to find out more about her daughter's power and two, to get away from the father.

Since her power did no harm to others, Mai lived her life normally like an average teenager, until she was invited to the School of Magic. Wanting to learn more about her abilities, she made her way to the school.
