  1. <quote>The European car market definitely can't be compared to the American obsession with SUVs.</quote>
  2. <p><a href="https://europe.autonews.com/article/20170811/ANE/170739935/suvs-will-continue-to-dominate-in-europe">Why</a> <a href="https://bestride.com/news/the-crossover-craze-is-not-just-an-american-thing-heres-whats-happening-in-europe-and-china">not</a>? (TL;DR: SUV and SUV sales continue to grow as traditionally-shaped car sales decrease in europe.)</p>
  3. <quote>Sure, there is a niche market for truck-like vehicles,</quote>
  4. <p>Here in the USA <a href="https://www.storagecafe.com/blog/crossovers-conquer-america-suv-sales-triple-decade/">the "SUV" market is dominated by CUVs</a>. Mind you, the most popular vehicles in the country are pickup trucks, but those aren't SUVs, even though many people use them as if they were and basically never put anything into the bed. CUVs aren't really SUVs either, being car-based and not truck-based. The fact is that America is dominated by trucks first, and by car-based "SUVs"-that-aren't-actually-SUVs second. Actual SUVs are a distant third, literally behind sedans.</p>
  5. <quote>as a continent with a much higher population density and less 'wild area', the need in classic use cases for SUVs is much smaller.</quote>
  6. <p>That is fully irrelevant. Only a tiny percentage of Americans <em>need</em> a vehicle with off-road capabilities, because only a tiny percentage of Americans will use them. Of those, a significant percentage simply have a crap driveway or similar and can't get in and out of their property reliably without 4WD. They're not using their 4WD recreationally at all. A coworker got his focus stuck in the mud in his own driveway and had to have another coworker tow him out... with a 4WD pickup. Luckily he's the guy who lives closest to work. He's been graveling but he's got some way to go.</p>
  7. <quote>This all leads to more demand on the lean and small side... not on the larger, heavier and more expensive side.</quote>
  8. <p>Cars have been adding weight for safety features and luxury content (like asphalt sound deadening material, or audio systems with lots of speakers) and a CUV barely weighs more than the car upon which it is based because it involves little more metal in the unit body. Europe not only has tons of CUVs (and again, it is the fastest-growing segment there by far, and the sales they're replacing are car sales) but also has "people movers" which are basically just ugly CUVs. But virtually all of them are FWD, you say? Well, basically all CUVs are FWD, too. Lots of people buy them solely for the upright seating position and taller doorway for easier entry and exit.</p>
  9. <p>IOW: BS</p>
