- TOEFL Reading question types are similar to the types on this handout
- purpose questions: about why the passage was written (similar to topic or main idea questions)
- (read the first and last paragraph, read the first sentence of each other paragraph)
- detail questions: about specific details of the passage
- (look for numbers or the same words from the question)
- negative detail questions: detail questions with NOT or EXCEPT - about information that ISN’T included
- (skim for each of the answers, and choose the one you don’t find)
- sequence questions: detail questions about the order in which something occurs
- (find order-related transition words like “first”, “second”, and “finally”)
- inference questions: about something that is implied or can be inferred from the reading, but which is not stated directly (a wrong answer is often something stated directly, because this cannot then be implied by other parts of the reading)
- gist questions = main idea questions: about the overall idea or theme of a reading
- ---
- p. 60 - Take 3 minutes to try to find the answers to all of these questions in the passage (without first reading the passage)
- ---
- To help you answer part B, notice the “Did You Know” text that explains how British troops left in 1948. This is when India became independent.
- ---
- Homework: read the article about Mumbai on p. 58-59 and then answer or correct your answers to the questions on p. 60
