“First, although it’s just a baby, the people of this village call it Lord Okakushi, the Taker of Souls.”

“Was it a child who was taken, then?” Stories of young children disappearing were commonly linked to supernatural events.

“No, the child is the one making others disappear. And it is quite the strange power that does so as well. As far as we can tell, it is the power to make anything and everything disappear.”

By “making things disappear,” she must have meant it was killing them, but “anything and everything” seemed like an awfully wide scope for such an ability.

“I don’t understand its true identity,” she continued, “but it lives long for about a hundred years, and even if it dies it is replaced. That's why as soon as the previous one dies, the next is born. That’s what this child is.”

「まず、 やや 子 です けれど、 この 村 では お かくし 様 と 呼ば れ た はり ます」 「それ は、 神隠し にでも 遭っ た 子供 なのか」 　 幼い 子供 が 行方不明 になり、 それ に あやかし が 関わっ て いる という のは よく ある 話 だっ た。 「あの 子 は 隠す ほう や。 そして その 力 が なんと 言う のか、 けったい な もん でし てね。 考えつく 限り の ありとあらゆる もの を 隠す こと が できる ん です」 　 ここ で いう 隠す は、 死 を 意味 する 言葉 だろ う。 しかし あらゆる とは 大きく 出 た もの だっ た。 「その 正体 は わかり し ませ ん けど 長く 生き ても 百年 程度 で 死ん でも うて、 代替わり する ん よ。 前 のが 死ん だら、 次 のが 生まれ て き や はる わけ やね。 それ が あの 子 って わけ です」
