Nu-Traveler's Backstory

basically long story short, He was once a plucky young galactic adventurer in a universe ruled by gods and goddesses
they saw...potential in him, a destiny that would serve their own ends
So they tried to force his fate to follow that destiny and for a time it worked.
He worked as a galactic bounty hunter of sorts, except instead of finding people and killing them he'd find artifacts of power and bring them back
he was hired to do one such job by a rich mogul on a fertile plains world.
he went down to the planet to get the details on the job and as he was in the guy's study that's when he met her.
a maiden who transcended any beauty he had seen before, such resplendent glamour gracing his very eyes, at least in his words. He fell in love right then and there and as the mogul was signing the contracts he walked over to talk with her.
Just small talk, nothing more, but they hit it off and he'd make regular trips back to the planet on his quest to find the artifact the mogul wanted and every time he came back he'd get to know her more and more.
until eventually...they both fell in love and she'd spend long hours waiting for him to land in the spaceport so they could walk to her father's mansion together.
Their love...was pure, deep, and passionate but it was not meant to last.

one day, he finally found the artifact. A necromatic tool used to perform a ritual to grant the user immortality without having to attain lichdom
he brought the artifact back, not knowing what it did. The father had a master as that planet was secretly a den of dark wizards and necromancers.
They had everything they needed to commence the final ritual
they just needed a sacrifice
and the father's daughter was chosen to be so.
Unbenownst to Zakarias his beloved was being broken, forced into believing that he never loved her in order to break her and make her more compliant for the ritual
before the final blow could be struck to her psyche, she ran, ran deep into the fields of her home, racing past Zakarias.
He took off after her, not knowing what she planned to do.
He tried to stop her, tried to keep her from doing so.
but out of pure sorrow, she took her own life and in that moment Zakarias himself broke.
He cried.
He wallowed
he drowned in his sorrow
and he sought to take his own life as well
as he ran himself through with his blade....he saw it.
the very personification of death itself.
Death would normally not pass up the oppurtinity to reap a soul but this was differrent
the gods gave it direct orders to not reap his soul and to banish him from death until his destiny was complete
so death said to him "I cannot take your life mortal, you have a destiny far greater than any other, one that requires you to stay alive....so I will not reap your soul until that day comes but I promise you this, on that day you will be returned to your beloved."
and Death Left, leaving the now technically immortal Zakarias behind, his wounds healing at an incredible rate.
and....he left the planet.
and for years upon years he wallowed in sorrow, drowning himself in alcohol and other sins and vices yet no matter how much he tried to hurt himself and push himself over the edge....he always came back.
Eventually he gave up and...tried to follow the god's signs, cryptic messages showing him the path forward as they constantly teased the day he would be with his beloved once more, playing endless games with him as he slowly reached his so-called destiny.
this continued for hundreds upon thousands of years, Zakarias honed his skills in that time and became legendary as a traveling warrior of the gods, helping all those who's faith was absolute and pure.
but...as time went on, he became tired of the gods and their games, their constant teasing, their constant empty promises and cryptic messages.
so he devised a plan, a plan that would cement him in legend as both a famous and infamous figure.
Every 10000 years, a destroyer of worlds, a being that devoured gods came forth from beyond the veil, beyond the void. It sought to devour the gods in their entirety and then leave to devour another universe's gods.
They sought out Zakarias to fight off and seal the beast once more.
So....he waited right in front of the door to the realm of the gods.
and as the beast that devoured gods walked towards him...he made a decision he would come to regret for much of his long life.
He opened the door for the beast and it simply smiled as it ran past him and the screams of the divine filled the air.
and he walked away.
Forever banished from death, a destiny that will never be fulfilled.
and a sin he can never wipe away, no matter how much good he does.
