  9. For MiniLD44, it is with great pleasure that we can announce the first 7dRTS!
  10.
  11. It has often been said in recent years that the Real Time Strategy genre has stagnated. Since Command & Conquer, Starcraft, and Warcraft III, we have seen very little innovation.
  12.
  13. Yet all three of these games manage to hold a special place in the history of gaming, and in our hearts. High engagement, combined with high skill and a rich metagame, ensures their high replayability. Whenever we lose a game, our minds are buzzing with ideas for new things to try, identifying mistakes we made, and we are lured back in for "just one more game".
  14.
  15. A well balanced game can have great depth and subtlety, such that no matter how hard we might train, we never become a true master, merely reach new levels of apprenticeship.
  16.
  17.
  18. The rules are simple:
  19.
  20. - Your objective this July is to produce a Real-Time-Strategy game in 7 days. In the tradition of similar events like 7dRL and 7dFPS, it should be interesting to see if we can innovate some new mechanics, or blur the lines between it and other genres, or reinvent the RTS genre completely. RTS can be defined very broadly, as being any real-time game that involves some degree of strategic decision making.
  21.
  22. - This contest runs from Monday 22nd-29th July 2013. You do not have to work on your game for all 7 days.
  23.
  24. - You are free to use any pre-existing base code and art assets, as long as you have permission from whoever owns them. You are free to prepare material now, specifically for this contest.
  25.
  26. - You may work solo or in teams. If you are predominatly a coder, then feel free to ask others to help with art and sound effects. By joining forces you may be able to pull off something spectacular!
  27.
  28. - There is no requirement to submit source code with your entry, although you may choose to.
  29.
  30. - Be as faithful or as unfaithful to the genre as you please. Your game doesn't have to use 4X mechanics (expand, upgrade, observe, attack, defend). It doesn't have to be multiplayer. Nor does it have to have an AI for CPU controlled opponents. Nobody will be upset if you make a Turn-Based-Strategy game instead, or even if your gameplay isn't very strategic at all.
  31.
  32. - Most importantly, have fun!
  33.
  34. Now tell me you are in!
