  1. In all retrospect, she should have seen it coming.
  2.
  3. Her jade green blood, her status as a rainbow drinker, her lusus, everything had been leading up to this. The troll species was teetering on the brink of extinction, and repopulation without a mother grub was a biological impossibility. Everybody had been dodging the lack of a mother grub, and everybody knew it was because they were terrified of the consequences. Even the humans could tell how desperate things had gotten.
  4.
  5. Kanaya had always been one of the most level-headed of the Veil's inhabitants. She had taken on the looming problem with a clear mind and an extraordinary patience, but had still failed to come up with a solution to restore the trollian empire to it's state of actually existing. Even with Karkat's moirailing and Rose's matespritship, Kanaya had still felt a pang of guilt at her failure.
  6.
  7. That was when the dreams started. After the game had ended, Rose, Jade and Feferi had managed to create a barricade between the kids' world and the horrorterrors'. Even though Dave was the only one with a fully intact dreamself, the block between planes meant that sleeping was once again possible for the other 15 players. Of course, nobody dreamed; for them, the act of sleeping simply meant dozing off in a pile or bed and finding themselves awake and refreshed some time later. This meant that Kanaya's vivid dreams were a shock to the bewildered troll, even after she had become expectant of them.
  8.
  9. She would see the world through tinted, warped lenses. Below her, wrigglers of all the colors in the rainbow would squirm and writhe in a pool of multicolored fluid. Kanaya found herself feeling happy, nurturing, almost motherly to the young grubs, and for a few brief moments it felt like she was in some kind of paradise.
  10.
  11. Suddenly, her mind would fill with decidedly less enjoyable things. The clacking of claws, the gurgling and tearing of an unseen beast, and a pain in her gut that slowly rose, up through her body, before becoming an abstract terror. She could hear murmuring cries, voices from her friends, and then she would be alone, crying and pleading for forgiveness, for the others to return, to help her, to love her, to accept her, to-
  12.
  13. Kanaya awoke in a cold sweat, her heart pounding and her face smeared with green.
  14.
  15. ---
  16.
  17. She had never mentioned the dreams to others, not even Rose. The human had become close friends to Kanaya almost instantly upon reaching the Veil, and this quickly blossomed into love. Sure, Karkat threw several dozen explosive rants about inter-species reproducing, but neither of them expected to conceive anything, and were content simply cuddling and pleasuring each other.
  18.
  19. After the first few times she had that horrible dream, she began to anticipate a pattern. Every few nights, she would be stressed, even frustrated, for whatever reason. Sometimes it was Vriska and her irons, sometimes it was Dave being an insufferable prick. When she returned to her respiteblock, she would fall asleep and have the same nightmare she had endured for the past month.
  20.
  21. The first few times it had happened, she was lucky enough to be alone, and afterwards she managed to schedule around them, ensuring Rose would be in her own room while Kanaya writhed in mental agony. She didn't want to worry the human; Kanaya was more than capable of handing a few bad dreams, even if everybody else she knew weren't having any dreams at all.
  22.
  23. One night, she had decided she was fed up with the recurring dreams. Feigning interest in cooking, she had joined Gamzee for a session of sopor slime pie baking, and slipped one back with her. The juggalo didn't mind; if a motherfuckin' sister wants to get her munch on, he was more than happy to help. Kanaya had hoped the slime would dilute her mind enough to prevent the dream, and although she did indeed sleep peacefully that night, she awoke another new sensation within her; hunger.
  24.
  25. Which was where she was now. The realization had dawned on her slowly, that she was soon to become the savoir of the troll species by herself, but at the moment she had more pressing issues to deal with. Namely, her gut; Kanaya had slipped down to the alchemiter and created a veritable feast, then returned to her room and devoured every scrap of the delicious human food in the span of half an hour.
  26.
  27. She groaned inwardly; her stomach was churning and bubbling at the ridiculous influx of food, and she had managed to tear a seam in her finely-crafted dress. Bloated and engorged, she would have been content to rest out her digestive pains had Rose not chosen that very moment to transportalize into Kanaya's respiteblock.
  28.
  29. If the human was shocked, she was good at hiding it; she simply looked the overstuffed troll up and down before racing to Kanaya's side, snuggling up against her and gazing at her with worried eyes.
  30.
  31. "Kanaya, what's wrong? You can tell me. Please, Kanaya."
  32.
  33. The rainbow drinker responded with a loud hiccup, slumping against Rose's shoulder.
  34.
  35. "It...It Is Nothing, Rose. I Have Not...Been Feeling Well Recently, And..."
  36.
  37. Cut off by another hiccup, Kanaya settled for just moving closer to Rose. The human took her in with open arms, wrapping one around her shoulders and using the other to rub her bloated stomach. As much as she wanted to figure out what was happening to her matesprit, it was clear Kanaya needed to rest and digest, and Rose settled for just holding her until the hiccups stopped and she fell into a peaceful sleep.
  38.
  39. ---
  40.
  41. A week had passed since that night, and although Kanaya had managed to not gorge herself into a stupor, her rapid eating had caused an extremely noticeable effect on her formerly lithe frame.
  42.
  43. Much of the added weight had gone to her legs; they were wide and soft, yet retained their smoothness and flexibility. Likewise, her stomach had ballooned outwards, hanging slightly over the waist of her dresses, soft to the touch. Her arms and breasts had also expanded, and while Vriska would normally have been jealous of her newfound DD cups, the blueblood was more interested in taunting Kanaya.
  44.
  45. "I can't 8elieve you, Kanaya! How did you manage to 8ecome such a pig? May8e you should ask Rose for dieting advice, since she's pro8a8ly the only one who talks to you now!"
  46.
  47. Kanaya would normally have taken amusement from the following verbal beatdown courtesy of Karkat, but unlike their past scuffles, Vriska's words cut straight through the heavyset jadeblood. She knew her gains were because of her impending transformation, but she dodged every question sent her way, even her matesprit's.
  48.
  49. That night, Kanaya found herself alone in her respiteblock, sewing new clothes to fit her bloated frame. She had unceremoniously torn everything else she had, and had settled for wrapping herself in a blanket while she worked. Although focused, she still heard Rose enter behind her, walking up to her and wrapping her arms around Kanaya's shoulders.
  50.
  51. "Did you need help with that?"
  52.
  53. Kanaya sighed, not looking at the human. She knew she should tell Rose, tell her how she was going to change so drastically, how she was inwardly terrified, but...
  54.
  55. "No, I Have Made Satisfactory Progress By Myself. I Appreciate Your Concern, However."
  56.
  57. Now it was Rose's turn to sigh, stepping away from the bundled-up rainbow drinker and sitting on a nearby table. "Kanaya, I'm worried about you. You can talk to me if anything's wrong." When there was no reply, she stood and left, leaving Kanaya alone to contemplate her future.
  58.
  59. ---
  60.
  61. Looking up at the gray ceiling, Kanaya felt green beads forming in the corners of her eyes. The dreams had become less terrifying, but she had seen her own body in further detail. Wide eyes, rows of pointed legs, a massive abdominal sac...every time she realized just how much different she would be, the tears threatened to pour out.
  62.
  63. She was transforming. As if the massive amounts of fat she had piled on didn't make this obvious enough, small claws had formed on her sides, deep beneath her layers of flab. A small lump of hardened flesh was forming on her tailbone, and her already-sharp teeth were elongating and moving to reveal small, budding spinnerets.
  64.
  65. But the worst part was her friends. She had locked herself in her respiteblock, blocking the transportalizer with a heavy cabinet. She couldn't let anybody see her like this; even if they accepted her now, she knew that once the transformation was complete, she would be nothing more than a massive beast, a mockery of her former self. It was nothing short of miraculous that Rose even bothered to try and comfort her.
  66.
  67. And there it was, the flow of jade tears running down her face. Rose, her friend, her matesprit, her...lover, that was the word humans used. She would lose that, the nights spent cuddling, kissing, just being with each other. She had promised Rose that she would be there for her, back when they had first admitted their mutual affection, and now she was going to break that promise by becoming a monstrous, inhuman creature against her own will.
  68.
  69. Choking back the sobs, she turned to look at her husktop. The messages were piling up, friends worried about her absence, worried about her silence, worried about her.
  70.
  71. EB: kanaya?
  72. EB: i know this is sudden but everybody's really worried about you!
  73. EB: it'd be great even if you just said you were ok!
  74. EB: so...yeah.
  75.
  76. AC: :33 < *ac sniffs the air, looking for her friend*

  98. TT: But I want you to know that whatever happens, I will be here for you.
  99. TT: Waiting, no matter how long it takes.
  100.
  101. ---
  102.
  103. Rose's snarky broad facade broke the moment she entered the room.
  104.
  105. In the far corner, Kanaya sat, staring at the wall aimlessly. She had blown up even more, almost as wide as she was tall. She was completely nude as well, and although this wasn't the first time Rose had seen a nude Kanaya, her heart still skipped a beat. Discarded scraps of cloth and sewing tools lay scattered across the floor.
  106.
  107. Kanaya herself was huddled, shaking, and her girth was the least of the changes that had befallen the troll. Eight black, pointed claws protruded from her sides, squeezing against her massive stomach, drawing minute amounts of green blood where they poked into her skin. A large, tumor-like growth had formed on her lower back, resting against her enormous rear, and hardened ridges lined her flabby back. Her horns had grown further out, twisting in on themselves painfully, and small nubs formed on her scalp further back. Much of her hair had become coarse and wispy, some even falling off completely. Most noticeably, her eyes had distorted, widening and glossing over, and her mouth was forced open by jagged fangs and protruding tubes. Silk webbing splattered across the walls and floor, wet strings dripping from her mouth.
  108.
  109. "Oh my god, Kanaya, oh fuck..."
  110.
  111. Rose ran across the room, babbling almost incoherently, and practically attached herself to the troll. Kanaya turned her head at her, and Rose could see the jade liquid pouring down her face.
  112.
  113. "Kanaya, say something, please, I'm here, talk to me, oh god Kanaya, what's happening, tell me!"
  114.
  115. Upon realizing her matesprit was there, on the verge of crying out of fear and worry, Kanaya burst into uncontrolled sobbing. Rose hugged her, and the two stayed like that for a few minutes, Kanaya sobbing into Rose's shoulder and Rose stroking her hair and whispering into her ear.
  116.
  117. "It's all right, it's all right, I'm right here, everything's going to be fine, shhh, it's okay..."
  118.
  119. A flash of light formed behind them, although neither of them turned to look. There was a silence, before Rose and Kanaya found themselves with another troll in the room.
  120.
  121. "OH MY FUCKING GOD KANAYA IS THAT YOU OH GOD OH FUCK KANAYA FUCK WHAT HAPPENED ARE YOU OK HOLY FUCK SHIT OH MY GOD PLEASE TELL ME YOU'RE OK OH GOD OH GOD OH GOD"
  122.
  123. Karkat flung himself towards the two girls, still screaming and pleading, and clung to Kanaya, until his voice dropped and he joined Rose in babbling whispers into the crying troll's ear.
  124.
  125. ---
  126.
  127. Dabbing the last few tears from Kanaya's face, Rose turned to look at the rest of the group. It had taken a good hour before the hysterics had died down; it was one thing to see Rose completely lose her cool, but John, Terezi, Tavros, Aradia, even Gamzee and Dave had flown into a worried panic upon realizing what had happened to the jadeblood.
  128.
  129. "She's ok. Everything's going to be fine." Rose could hear the slight wavering in her own voice, but pressed onwards. "It's...she's transforming. It's a gradual process...it's natural, she'll be fine, she just..."
  130.
  131. "A mother grub then"
  132.
  133. Fourteen heads turned to look at Aradia. "Kanaya's jade blood is an extreme rarity for our species and her lusus was a virgin Mother Grub. It seems like she's transforming into a Mother Grub herself to propagate our species."
  134.
  135. "OK WAIT HOLD THE FUCK ON. ARE YOU TRYING TO TELL US THAT KANAYA IS TURNING INTO SOME KIND OF GIGANTIC FUCKING INSECT THING, BECAUSE LAST I CHECKED THAT'S WHAT MOTHER GRUBS WERE. GIANT FUCKING INSECTS."
  136.
  137. "Yes, Karkat. That Is Exactly What Is Happening."
  138.
  139. Everybody in the room turned to stare at Kanaya. She had managed to stop crying, but was still visibly shaking. Looking down at the floor, she continued.
  140.
  141. "I Will Complete The Metamorphosis In The Central Chamber Of This Meteor. Afterwards, I Will Live My Life As A Mother Grub, Repopulating The Species And Living In Relative Solitude."
  142.
  143. At this, Karkat stood up roughly, very nearly knocking over Dave in the process. "OK, IF YOU WANT TO BECOME A FUCKING WRIGGLER MACHINE, BE MY GUEST, BUT DO NOT THINK FOR A SECOND THAT WE'RE GOING TO LET YOU SIT IN A SHITTY ROOM BY YOURSELF FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE." Despite yelling, genuine concern was visible in the Cancer's eyes.
  144.
  145. "But Mother Grubs Are Incapable Of Even Speech. I Will Be Nothing More Than A Bestial Entity."
  146.
  147. "That doesn't matter! Aradia was dead all the time and we never stopped being furriends with her Even after she exploded pawfully when she was a robot!"
  148.
  149. "Nepeta2 riight. Nobody2 planniing on abandoniing you ju2t becau2e you wont be a troll anymore. IIf anythiing, you 2hould be proud of what youre goiing two do."
  150.
  151. Eyes watering again, Kanaya looked over the others. "But..."
  152.
  153. She was cut off by Rose, who leaned up and kissed her on the cheek. "But nothing. You'll still be Kanaya, and that's all that matters."
  154.
  155. "OK, AS GRATEFUL AS I AM FOR THE REASSURANCE, CAN WE PLEASE KEEP THE SHITTY MAKING OUT TO THE BEDROOMS?"
  156.
  157. "Aw, come on, don't ruin the mood!", remarked John, pushing Karkat playfully.
  158.
  159. Looking from Rose back to the now-scuffling Karkat and John, Kanaya found herself smiling for the first time in several months. "Rose...Thank You."
  160.
  161. ---
  162.
  163. Kanaya waddled her way to the central chamber of the meteor, ready to begin the final phase of her transformation. Her weight gain had stopped, putting her at nearly 450 human pounds, although she had still stopped to gorge herself one last time before leaving. The tumor on her back had formed a bulky insectoid abdomin, and her eyes had lost almost all their color, becoming blank green orbs.
  164.
  165. Behind her were Rose, Karkat and John. Matespritship and moirailship were far more important than the stiff legs from the long walk, and the Heir of Breath had taken it upon himself to alchemize as many helpful items as he could for the soon-to-be Mother Grub.
  166.
  167. Finally, they reached the room. It was wide, round, and damp, yet warm and oddly hospitable. In the middle was a long rocky spike, which Kanaya quickly began forming a silken cocoon around. Meanwhile, the others began setting up a small living space; Rose had decided to stay with Kanaya for the entity of the metamorphosis, and while Karkat wanted to do the same, he was needed back at the lab. Once everything was set up, John and Karkat left, but not before swearing to keep in contact.
  168.
  169. Now alone, Rose turned to have one last conversation with her matesprit.
  170.
  171. "Kanaya, there's nothing to be afraid of. I plan to stay here until everything's done."
  172.
  173. "I Know. Thank You, Rose."
  174.
  175. The human settled for giving Kanaya one last kiss on the lips, before backing up as the silken cocoon closed. There was so much they wanted to say, but the transformation wasn't going to stop for them.
  176.
  177. Sitting down on the makeshift bed, Rose smiled. "Good job, Kanaya."
  178.
  179. And so she stayed. The days passed by, as the cocoon slowly shifted it's mass, growing higher and higher. Rose remained by it's side, watching and waiting for the day when Kanaya would emerge. Equius constructed servant robots to send Rose meals, and she talked to the shapeless mass of wet string and silk, telling her about the happenings above. How John had spilled sopor everywhere while baking with Gamzee, how Tavros had accidently uploaded his fanfiction to the public server, how Karkat had managed to coat his respiteblock with genetic fluids, how Eridan had somehow begun a matespritship with a sub sandwich.
  180.
  181. Together, the two girls endured.
  182.
  183. ---
  184.
  185. Rose whistled to herself as she pushed the metal trolley down the halls. Several buckets rattled within, their contents sloshing about, a testament to the kids' survival in the Veil. As she pushed through the large doors, she smiled to herself at the noises from within.
  186.
  187. What had previously been a dank, dark cavern was now a lively center of colors and sounds. Tiny grubs wriggled about the floor, all different colors, with some forming cocoons and others crawling atop each other. Rose was careful not to step on any of the young wrigglers, as she made her way to the far side of the cave.
  188.
  189. Nestled in the far corner sat Kanaya. Ten long claws gripped the floor, an elongated abdomen curling down the wall. Two soft wings fluttered to themselves, as the Mother Grub turned to look at Rose. Despite the massive skull-like head, her eyes showed care and love, and she let out a soft bray as the human approached.
  190.
  191. Sitting next to the massive insectoid, Rose gently stroked her cheekbone. She had sat by Kanaya during her entire transformation, and even now would join her deep beneath the laboratories and halls of the meteor. "I brought you the pails, Kanaya.", she remarked, electing a happy growl from her lover-turned-guardian.
  192.
  193. Looking through warped lenses at the world, Kanaya nuzzled the young human. The wrigglers crawling amongst the splattered fluids were more than enough to prove to both herself and her partner that it had all been worth it. She could still remember the terrifying dreams, but by now, they were nothing more than barely-forgotten memories. For now, she was happy, and the future of the troll species was brighter than it had been in sweeps.
