  1.
  2. Jinx
  3. honestly the evidence against Iran so far seems pretty damning, but i guess it wouldn't be the first time we were tricked by an administration :)
  4. Jinx
  5. this is why it's so important to have someone in the presidency who isn't all bluster
  6. Jinx
  7. then threats mean something
  8. Jinx
  9. ironically that's largely seen as one of Obama's biggest failures: the Syrian red-line
  10. Jinx
  11. personally i blame congress though--iirc he sought congressional approval in effort to curb the excess authority of the old terrorism authorization act
  12. Jinx
  13. frankly, Obama did everything he could to preserve norms--and this is at least one example where he restricted his own power in deference to the constitution
  14. Jinx
  15. anyway
  16. Jinx
  17. my point is simply that any threat ("locked and loaded") from Trump is going to be largely meaningless to Iran
  18. Jinx
  19. all Trump has done is fuel the hard-liners to say "see, we can't possibly negotiate with the USA"
  20. infspire
  21. What evidence?
  22. Jinx
  23. frankly he's backed himself into a corner where the only retaliatory solution is a bombing--a very dangerous prospect
  24. infspire
  25. Nothing from the Trump administration is evidence.
  26. infspire
  27. Remember, he sharpied a weather map.
  28. Jinx
  29. heh
  30. Jinx
  31. that's why i put the caveat above :)
  32. Jinx
  33. ("but i guess it wouldn't...")
  34. infspire
  35. Jinx: It doesn't matter if Iran provided aid.
  36. infspire
  37. You see that, right?
  38. infspire
  39. I can detail the argument, if not.
  40. Jinx
  41. from the map i saw, Iran didn't just provide aid--it launched the missiles from its own territory
  42. infspire
  43. I have seen no claims of that.
  44. infspire
  45. Citation?
  46. Jinx
  47. iirc it was on either PBS or Amanpour last night
  48. Jinx
  49. i can try to search if you like
  50. infspire
  51. Yes, please.
  52. 16:22 infspire
  53. 1. SA has been waging a genocidal war against Yemen
  54. infspire
  55. 2. Yemen has a legal and more right to defend itself
  56. 16:23 infspire
  57. 3. The US has been supplying SA with massive amounts of weapons for years in this genocide
  58. 16:23 Jinx
  59. moral right?*
  60. infspire
  61. 4. The attack on the oil refinery killed very few people
  62. infspire
  63. moral, yes
  64. Jinx
  65. eh
  66. infspire
  67. 5. If Iran supplied the weapons, they'd still be far less culpable than the US, given (3).
  68. Jinx
  69. i don't condone Saudi Arabia at all
  70. Jinx
  71. but i also don't think two wrongs make a right
  72. infspire
  73. Conclusion: There's no justification for attacking Iran, even if they supplied the weapons.
  74. infspire
  75. Jinx: You're not doing partial good when you hold only the weaker party accountable @ two wrongs.
  76. Jinx
  77. the justification would be to maintain international norms
  78. infspire
  79. You're just creating more harm.
  80. infspire
  81. The ones the US isn't following?
  82. Jinx
  83. i.e. you don't just invade/bomb another country without some international consensus
  84. infspire
  85. The US should strike Iran for doing a lesser version of what the US is doing?
  86. infspire
  87. How is that remotely coherent?
  88. Jinx
  89. i don't claim the US is faultless :)
  90. infspire
  91. The US can play no role whatsoever in this situation.
  92. Jinx
  93. again: two wrongs don't make a right
  94. infspire
  95. I reject your meme.
  96. infspire
  97. I told you why.
  98. Jinx
  99. it's not a meme... iirc it's an aphorism :)
  100. infspire
  101. Aphorisms are types of memes.
  102. Jinx
  103. "a pithy observation that contains a general truth"
  104. infspire
  105. It's a quick, consolidated piece of information that has some utility. I am arguing it doesn't apply here.
  106. Jinx
  107. if you go by that, then any idea is "a meme"
  108. infspire
  109. I disagree.
  110. Jinx
  111. "an element of a culture or system of behavior that may be considered to be passed from one individual to another by nongenetic means, especially imitation."
  112. infspire
  113. "This sentence that is self-referencing in the conversation with Jinx on 2019 Sep 19 is an idea." is an idea, but not a meme.
  114. infspire
  115. It is not a highly replicated idea.
  116. infspire
  117. Aphorisms are.
  118. Jinx
  119. eh
  120. infspire
  121. I am ware of your meme/heuristic.
  122. Jinx
  123. that really exaggerates the classification of "meme"
  124. infspire
  125. I reject it.
  126. infspire
  127. I reject it on the basis of philosophy and justice after observing how power defends itself in human societies.
  128. Jinx
  129. heh
  130. infspire
  131. I think when there are two parties, both with grievances, only applying accountability to the weaker party is unjustified.
  132. Jinx
  133. i'm not arguing the US should "go it alone"
  134. infspire
  135. I think it leads to a worse situtation.
  136. Jinx
  137. but i am arguing that there certainly needs to be some sort of consequence for any attack of that magnitude
  138. 16:28 infspire
  139. I am arguing the US has no moral authority whatsoever to do anything whatsoever to Iran in this context.
  140. infspire
  141. So Iran should attack the United States, then.
  142. infspire
  143. This is your argument.
  144. infspire
  145. It's wildly incoherent.
  146. Jinx
  147. probably, yes--if they really feel they have been "attacked"
  148. infspire
  149. You support Iran attacking the US to uphold international norms by supplying weapons to SA.
  150. Jinx
  151. (they call our sanctions "economic terrorism")
  152. Jinx
  153. ...
  154. Jinx
  155. i don't think i mentioned anything about SA?
  156. infspire
  157. And since the US is about 1000 times more guilty, you support 1000 times more attacks on the US by Iran than the traitorous Trump administration is contemplating.
  158. Jinx
  159. in my justification, at least
  160. infspire
  161. "i.e. you don't just invade/bomb another country without some international consensus"
  162. Jinx
  163. i do generally believe in proportionality, yes
  164. infspire
  165. You haven't provided evidence Iran has done this.
  166. infspire
  167. Your claim is inconsistent with the warhawks in the Trump administration.
  168. infspire
  169. Who have *only* claimed the provided the advanced drone technology to Yemeni fighters.
  170. Jinx
  171. well perhaps if you weren't spouting off about memes and flooding the channel with repetition, i'd have a chance to search for a link :)
  172. infspire
  173. Jinx: When you behave poorly, you lose authority.
  174. infspire
  175. Example.
  176. infspire
  177. Rape is wrong and people doing raping should be held accountable.
  178. infspire
  179. So, normally, a police officer would play a role in that accountability.
  180. infspire
  181. So, saying a police officer has raped 573 people in the last 5 years.
  182. infspire
  183. That's the first wrong in your heuristic.
  184. Jinx
  185. unfortunately, even the PBS website won't cooperate with my old browser, and my computer is in no situation to launch the (comparatively) new one
  186. infspire
  187. Then, there's a guy in town that has been alleged have done their second rape.
  188. Jinx
  189. ...
  190. Jinx
  191. you aren't making coherent arguments
  192. infspire
  193. We would never, ever, ever, want to encourage the rapist police officer to play any part whatsoever in the accountability for that second rapist.
  194. infspire
  195. I am, of course.
  196. infspire
  197. As I am a brilliant philosopher.
  198. Jinx
  199. ...
  200. infspire
  201. My argument is extremely straightforward.
  202. Jinx
  203. okay, i guess we're done here
  204. Jinx
  205. let me know when you want to have a real converstion
  206. infspire
  207. Instead, what would you do?
  208. infspire
  209. You'd remove the police officer from any and all power for their crimes.
  210. infspire
  211. Then, independently and unrelatedly, you'd also go after the second rapist.
  212. infspire
  213. If you did not hold the police officer accountable, and only went after the second rapist, you'd be making things worse (this is not so clear in this analogy).
  214. infspire
  215. Jinx: What was incoherent about my argument?
  216. infspire
  217. I made a claim your argument was incoherent and then detailed what that was.
  218. infspire
  219. Specifically, that you'd never support Iran bombing major American cities for the US involved in the SA war against Yemen.
  220. infspire
  221. Even though that is entailed by support the US attacking Iran in the present context.
  222. infspire
  223. The unilateral leaving of a conversation is a fairly large violation of conversational dynamics.
  224. infspire
  225. It violates norms on the psychology and emotion of human conversations, as well as epistemic norms about evidence and truth telling.
  226. infspire
  227. Jinx: I put you on ignore for your unilateral leaving of a conversation without clear communication.
  228. infspire
  229. I will have that ignore be 72 hours at this time.
