Having an extra chromosome could be deleterious because people who have Down Syndrome have some physical features like; low muscle tone, short stature, upward slanted eyes, and a single crease against. But everyone is different,  sometimes not everyone gets the same appearance, these characteristics differ in degrees. Some can have a strong appearance or none at all. A mechanical explanation for this could be what happens to the genes and chromosomes while in development.
