  1. [2015-12-13 13:05:07] <Wildbow> The landlord lurks in the entryway of the apartment, as you inspect the surroundings. The apartment is serviceable, three and a half rooms, admittedly with a small bathroom, but it's clean, and it's set at a corner, with windows giving a somewhat unremarkable view of ongoing construction, a pharmacy across the street, and some trees. The landlord is a young woman, younger than thirty, and...
  2. [2015-12-13 13:05:08] <Wildbow> ...pretty in a knee-length dress with a flower pattern and a cardigan, though she seems shy or reserved.
  3. [2015-12-13 13:06:07] <Wildbow> She fidgets somewhat as you look over the apartment you arranged online, turning the keen eyes that helped you be an investigator and a burglar to the task of identifying any imminent issues.

  15. [2015-12-13 13:14:58] <Shem|Archival> I approach the computer and turn it on, inspecting the rest of the apartment meanwhile. Checking if anything looks out of the ordinary.

  18. [2015-12-13 13:18:17] <Shem|Archival> I set up the computer, transferring my documents and the like. While it's working, I'll attempt to use my power on the room I'm in, looking for anything interesting.

  20. [2015-12-13 13:21:01] <Wildbow> As the hard drive whirrs, you close your eyes, focusing your power. Your mind's eye opens, and you see the room in an entirely new way, at first like a bird's eye view, looking down from the ceiling, then from the sides, then the floor, and every angle. The surfaces and surroundings seem to take on an exaggerated sharpness, every bump in the paint highlighted five times over.
  21. [2015-12-13 13:21:44] <Wildbow> You see it as it was in the past, over days, weeks, and months, the movement of the sunlight across the floor, the shadows of nighttime and where the sunlight doesn't reach,e xaggerated.

  23. [2015-12-13 13:24:06] <Wildbow> And, wispy, ill-defined, you see the figures of previous tenants, home between nine at night and seven in the morning, eating, sleeping, talking, cooking. They were messy, they smoked, and smoked weed, and they drank, and they fucked on the regular. You can see the arguments over financial matters, the frustration, on faces that are distorted, like pictures taken a half-second apart from...
  24. [2015-12-13 13:24:07] <Wildbow> ...one another, the features stretched from one image to the next, mouths yawning, expressions contorting, ghostly caricatures of people.
  25. [2015-12-13 13:24:54] <Wildbow> And you see the landlady, moving through the space over the weeks prior, at first to clean and paint, then to stop in the apartment every day, around the same time, wiping the windowsill where water leaked through the window.
  26. [2015-12-13 13:25:41] <Wildbow> It's clean, with a bit of water damage in the bathroom by the foot of the tub, and a spider web the landlady's dusting missed in the top shelf of the linen cupboard.
  27. [2015-12-13 13:25:44] <Wildbow> //
  28. [2015-12-13 13:30:28] <Shem|Archival> Good. Nothing out of the ordinary, and not a place anyone would take interest in. Landlady seems like a decent person, and it's good that she is consistent. Wouldn't want her to barge in while I'm busy.
  29. [2015-12-13 13:32:46] <Shem|Archival> I open the browser, and begin searching the web for the basic information about the suits I've heard about. They sound appealing, and useful.
  30. [2015-12-13 13:33:12] <Shem|Archival> Would want to know how to get one, and how many there are, first of all.

  33. [2015-12-13 13:36:21] <Wildbow> The computer is unfamiliar, and it takes you a while to find your way and get all the little bits and bobs installed. The day gets late and progress is slow - the suits you heard about are popping up here and there, as part of an ongoing crime wave, and there isn't, as far as you can tell, so much as a hint as to where you could go or who you could ask to get one.
  34. [2015-12-13 13:36:24] <Wildbow> //
  35. [2015-12-13 13:38:19] <Shem|Archival> That's disappointing. I shouldn't have even bothered.
  36. [2015-12-13 13:39:09] <Shem|Archival> On the other hand, if there's so little info it might not be such an important thing to get, right now.
  37. [2015-12-13 13:41:39] <Shem|Archival> Next on the list - heros. I should work far from their base of operations, or the police. Information regarding their powers would be excellent, too, but if everything works out I wouldn't encounter them anyways. I try not to spend too much time searching, this time.

  42. [2015-12-13 13:44:49] <Wildbow> The discouragement from the prior searches doesn't help - the searches are slow, broken up by the fact that the heroes here haven't unified, there's mention of a new group, the Suits, but overall, very little to be found but a few mentions of powers on various news articles, which you can't really pull together to figure out any one particular individual.

  44. [2015-12-13 13:46:32] <Wildbow> Your stomach growls. It's six in the evening, and you drove for most of the day. The cupboards are empty, and the moving boxes you have in the back seat of the car have only the food staples that would survive the journey. 51. [2015-12-13 14:01:05] <Wildbow> The meal is entirely underwhelming, but it quells the hunger pangs. You dig out sheets from a box, and make the bed, before settling in. Without curtains and other amenities, sleeping at a different temperature and ambient noise than you're used to, at a rather early hour, it could have been a restless night. You manage, and rise in the morning, more prepared to get to work.

  54. [2015-12-13 14:29:27] <Shem|Archival> My plan is to find an empty house, get in and out without being seen, and take what I can find. Private houses will be easier to find empty, and noise will attract less attention.
  55. [2015-12-13 14:30:21] <Shem|Archival> I shouldn't get too greedy the first time. No stores, or secure places.

  60. [2015-12-13 14:36:06] <Wildbow> The nearest cafe is just a short walk away, and the cold winter climate necessitates a jacket and boots. Snow is falling, and traffic crawls - one of the two lanes of traffic is taken up with construction work, dug up with machines and workers in heavy winter clothing and orange vests doing what they can in the cold.
  61. [2015-12-13 14:37:16] <Wildbow> The buildings to the far side of the construction are homes, apartment buildings and houses, and the buildings to your right, the cafe included, are businesses, more contemporary than the quainter Lausanne style of some of the downtown areas.
  62. [2015-12-13 14:38:43] <Wildbow> You finish your meal and start back to get your tools, and pause as you see a spot of blood on snow. You spy the shadows under some branches and above a hedge, where a bird of prey is busy taking apart... another bird of prey, tearing at feathers and flesh and taking its sibling to pieces.

  70. [2015-12-13 14:44:53] <Wildbow> This is more comfortable terrain than the computer business. You find the higher income area, but not so high income that the homeowners don't have to go to work. Making your way down the street, you find a good target, a three-story building with tall glass windows, in a very modern style. There's a patch on the driveway where the snow isn't as high, and tire treads suggest the homeowner...
  71. [2015-12-13 14:44:54] <Wildbow> ...pulled out an hour or two ago.

  74. [2015-12-13 14:46:28] <Wildbow> A narrow alley extends along the right side of the house, leading through a gate to what might be a long backyard, extending perhaps 100' back behind the property. Fences separate the backyard from the neighboring properties.
  75. [2015-12-13 14:48:01] <Shem|Archival> I turn on my power for a few moments, using it on the house, and then on the backyard behind it. I need to make sure there's nobody home. Dogs, especially, would be problematic. I can't outsmart dogs, and I forgot to bring a convenient piece of steak to lure them away.
  76. [2015-12-13 14:48:04] <Shem|Archival> ||
  77. [2015-12-13 14:49:09] <Wildbow> You feel your power kick in, like the tunnel vision one experiences when they're driving and accelerate rapidly, everything around the edges blurring as your mind's eye opens.
  78. [2015-12-13 14:49:55] <Wildbow> Sound equipment in the basement, with a collection of guitars, a widescreen television with a surround sound system, the individual pieces of equipment blurry where they get used more, moved from place to place.
  79. [2015-12-13 14:51:18] <Wildbow> Further down the basement, a teenager's room, empty. A small dog sleeps in a locked kennel, the bedroom door closed. The ground floor has some nice kitchen stuff, but nothing worth taking. Upstairs, however, you get to the bedrooms, you locate jewelry and artwork that might be worth something.
  80. [2015-12-13 14:51:38] <Wildbow> //
  81. [2015-12-13 14:52:03] <Shem|Archival> That's excellent. Let's go.
  82. [2015-12-13 14:52:24] <Shem|Archival> Door is almost definitely locked, and I am no good at lockpicking. Windows might be left open, or unlocked. I walk around the house, searching for any open windows.
  83. [2015-12-13 14:53:08] <Shem|Archival> Before entering, though, I'll need to go to the backyard and change to my costume, of course.
  84. [2015-12-13 14:53:16] <Shem|Archival> ||
  85. [2015-12-13 14:54:22] <Wildbow> The space between houses where a narrow path leads around the side of the house seems to be the best bet for getting changed, but it's the middle of winter. The cold takes a little bit out of you as you quickly don your costume.
  86. [2015-12-13 14:55:06] <Wildbow> The information provided by your power tells you that the kitchen window is frequently cracked to allow smoke to ventilate. You walk around to approach it and ease it open.
  87. [2015-12-13 14:55:13] <Wildbow> //
  88. [2015-12-13 14:55:42] <Shem|Archival> I should probably pad the costume some time, make it more comfortable for this weather. It was warmer when I started doing this.
  89. [2015-12-13 14:56:44] <Shem|Archival> I climb through the window carefully.
  90. [2015-12-13 14:58:03] <Shem|Archival> I'll head to the bedroom first.
  91. [2015-12-13 14:59:00] <Shem|Archival> If the dog is indeed locked, there's no need to be especially silent while going up the stairs, though I shouldn't make too much noise in any case. Might be people outside, walking nearby.
  92. [2015-12-13 15:00:12] <Shem|Archival> I enter the bedroom and look around.
  93. [2015-12-13 15:00:13] <Shem|Archival> ||
  94. [2015-12-13 15:02:27] <Wildbow> It's hard to be entirely positive the place is empty - your power focuses largely on the inanimate, things that remain in one place, and people are wisps, abstract, hard to define. It's a relief to find the room empty. A crimson bedspread and picture above the four-poster bed suggest a degree of class. Three different antique dressers have things collected atop them; one has the amassed...
  95. [2015-12-13 15:02:28] <Wildbow> ...collection of jewelry. It ranges in quality from the cheap to the higher quality stuff. One box has diamond studs - unfortunately low resale value, but better than some things.
  96. [2015-12-13 15:02:30] <Wildbow> //
  97. [2015-12-13 15:05:10] <Shem|Archival> I grab the jewelry and put all of it into a bag. All of it.
  98. [2015-12-13 15:06:19] <Shem|Archival> Now, the painting might be valuable. I take a closer look at it.
  99. [2015-12-13 15:06:26] <Shem|Archival> ||
  100. [2015-12-13 15:07:32] <Wildbow> The painting is likely done by a local artist, purchased at a gallery. A pale woman reclines on a couch outdoors, painted in oils, face skyward, while swans surround her, wings spread.
  101. [2015-12-13 15:08:05] <Wildbow> You hear a voice from down the hall. A shout. "Officer!"
  102. [2015-12-13 15:08:07] <Wildbow> //
  103. [2015-12-13 15:08:28] <Shem|Archival> Shit.
  104. [2015-12-13 15:09:16] <Shem|Archival> Who is that? I should have noticed them, or heard them at least.
  105. [2015-12-13 15:10:18] <Shem|Archival> I move to the corner of the room, away from the entrance, and use my power on the place the voice came from, and then the house entrance. Making sure it's me who caused this.
  106. [2015-12-13 15:10:36] <Shem|Archival> And "Officer"? Is there a cop nearby?
  107. [2015-12-13 15:10:40] <Shem|Archival> ||
  108. [2015-12-13 15:11:57] <Wildbow> You take cover, and focus on your power, zooming in on the direction of the sound. You see human shapes, wispy, but they're from hours ago, and if there are any now, they're too hard to make out in the storm of moving images, too new to the room, and too transient. This is the weakness of your particular form of clairvoyance.
  109. [2015-12-13 15:12:32] <Wildbow> Footsteps tromp, echoing oddly. Then silence.

  112. [2015-12-13 15:14:50] <Shem|Archival> I peek beyond the wall, through the doorway, for a split second. If nobody is in the hall, I try to quickly and silently close the door.

  120. [2015-12-13 15:20:09] <Wildbow> The bedroom has a little balcony. A glance down and out suggests the house was built on a slope. It's an effective three-story drop to the stone patio, which is dusted in an inch or two of snow.
  121. [2015-12-13 15:20:12] <Wildbow> //

  124. [2015-12-13 15:23:18] <Shem|Archival> Okay. I can do this. I open the window, and take out my rope. I'll climb down with it.
  125. [2015-12-13 15:24:01] <Shem|Archival> I tie the rope in a strong knot to a fixed object in the room, and start climbing down silently.

  127. [2015-12-13 15:25:06] <Wildbow> As you work, getting the rope out and preparing the hook at the window, you hear gunshots from down the hall. Tinny, false-sounding gunshots with none of the visceral impact a real gun would have. Tires screech, in much that same manner.
