- A-ha - Take On Me: 10 I first heard this on one of those "top 80 of the 80s" shows and it shaped my music taste to this day, and who I am as a person. And that's what music is meant to do,
- ABAO - kinakaian (Mother's Tongue): 8 This is cool and kind of creepy, it rules
- Bic Runga - Sway: 7 Bic says her name comes from the Chinese word for jade, but the Mandarin pronunciation of the word for jade is "yù". Maybe she's mistaken and it's short for the Korean word for jade which is "bichwi"? But although closer, even that doesn't sound right. I must get to the bottom of this. I have combed through online dictionaries looking at a host of East Asian languages and dialects, some of which are Chinese and some unrelated. I'm not messing around. anyway nice little ditty
- Bon Iver - Heavenly Father: 9 I love the white man Bon Iver especially when he gets kind of weird and surreal like this and writes Deep lyrics about religion and stuff
- Brenda Kahn - I Don't Sleep, I Drink Coffee Instead: 3 Such a relatable title. Anyway she is quite mistaken about van Gogh: it is well-known he cut off half of one of his ears but his nose was unharmed. Was this intentional? Also the "little black babies" line is ... weird. I don't really like this song! Somehow I'm not shocked this song came out in 1992. I don't often call music "dated (derogatory)" but this is it.
- Creed - Higher: 10 A staple of the alt-rock station my mom listened to in our minivan as a kid. It rules. I just found out 24 years later this song is about a dream he had, but am choosing to read it as I always have as being vaguely religious, because I like the thought of Scott Stapp writing a song about how he loves God in a "dudes rock" way.
- Daisuke Ishiwatari & Naoki Hashimoto - Smell of the Game (Guilty Gear Strive Opening Theme): 6 :metal: Good LARP, almost sounds like Metallica at times. Goes on a little too long though. Update: upon relistening I don't really like this but will keep it the same score because it amuses me nonetheless
- Dire Straits - Romeo & Juliet: 5 Why is the man singing like Bob Dylan. I like some songs by Dire Straits but don't know this one. It's alright. Update: he isn't singing that much like Bob Dylan so what was I was thinking. maybe a bit idk
- Drive-By Truckers - Decoration Day: 6 This is like the Grateful Dead (I do not listen to them) (this is likely influenced by how they have a song about trucking)
- Ecco2k - Play Em Like Atari: 6 For the longest time I didn't know the difference between Ecco2k and Eccojams and this is embarrassing to me now. I like Ecco2k! dude rocks. Not the biggest fan of this song though idk
- Echo & the Bunnymen - The Killing Moon: 10 This song rules and is one of the best songs of the 80. also Donnie Darko rules (both the movie and the song) formative experience for me
- Enji - Zavkhan: 9 Was trying to figure out what language this title was before hearing it and "Mongolian jazz-pop" was not something I expected to hear today but it rules
- Fightmilk - Overbite: 7 This is bubblegrunge (complimentary)
- Flume - Rushing Back (ft. Vera Blue): 9 Very important to note that Vera Blue did a cover of "Scarborough Fair" because that song rules. anyway this is kind of quirky and whatnot and she kind of sounds like Aurora to me so I like this it's neat
- Gang Gang Dance - Glass Jar: 4 I've never heard this band before and the name of this band feels not real somehow. This sounds like music to dissociate to so idk what to feel. Update: yeah I don't really like this. There is an AU where I do but it's making me anxious. It picked up by the end at least? That part makes me think of The Knife kinda. Don't ask me to explain this further
- Guns N' Roses - Paradise City: 10 It's an all-timer. The opening is simply iconic with the strummy riff and the booming drums. This rules. Not even Axl Rose being a megadouche nor the ending going on far longer than it needs can make me not like it.
- Haschak Sisters - Daddy Says No: 10 This is a jam and goes from "annoying" to "okay it's kind of catchy even if the lyrics are dumb" to "unironically I enjoy 'Daddy Says No' by Haschak Sisters". Call it brainrot, camp, a meme, I don't care just allow it to happen.
- ITZY - 24HRS: 10 It has come to my attention that some of you are not rocking with ITZY - 24HRS. This is a mistake. I'm loving everything about this: that this is two minutes long, the shrill vocals, the bass-heavy production (?! by Sophie what), the random piano part, the callback to "Dalla Dalla" (one of their best songs a total banger). This rules and sorry if you can't see it!
- Japandroids - Younger Us: 8 dudes rock
- Jason Isbell - Elephant: 8 Someone send me a :hugging: emote ... send us all one ...
- Kayoko Yoshizawa – Utopia: 3 Whoops sorry I'm sure someone out there loves this, and I can see the appeal, but it's kind of chaotic and making my head spin :catcry:
- Kyu Sakamoto - Ue o Muite Arukō (Sukiyaki): 5 The lore behind this song and its name kind of fascinates me but no matter how many times I hear it I will never remember how it goes
- Labi Siffre - I Got The...: 6 Had a moment of "oh good electric piano that rules" and then the beat switched and I thought "uhh what" and then found out this guy wrote "It Must Be Love" by Madness and now I don't know what to think
- Lil Wayne - The Price Is Wrong: 1 This is not like any Lil Wayne song I have ever heard before (which I admit is likely not many) and I do not like this one bit, anything about it
- Lips - Heave Ho!: 10 Wait this is more bonkers than I thought and it rules. From the name I was thinking it was "stomp clap" indie-folk but instead it's electroclash and I love that shit. This rules!
- Lord Huron - I Lied (ft. Allison Ponthier): 5 Yeah I am basic and have never heard any song by Lord Huron other than "The Night We Met" and if I hear that I *will* burst into tears. This is my first time hearing anything else by them though and this song is merely "kind of okay" and sounds like something on a country oldies station (neither derogatory nor complimentary it's just there)
- Los Jaivas - Mira Niñita: 9 This was a really good find, like nothing I've ever heard before, the opening is beautiful and then it's a jam at the end
- Lost In the Trees - Past Life: 8 :pensive:
- Mark Hollis - The Daily Planet: 7 it's vibes
- Mdou Moctar - Afrique Victime: 7 I want to hear the rest of this album now. "Desert blues" in Tuareg wtf that sounds awesome
- Mess Esque - Sweetspot: 8 This is very pretty and nice but (and I like long songs) why are so many songs in this rate so long
- Mr. Blobby - Mr. Blobby: 1 I hate this song and I don't like the Mr. Blobby bit he is creepy and not funny get him away from me I am laughing at it but it's that kind of nervous laughter when you're deeply uncomfortable
- Nina Simone - Sinnerman: 11 At last I can atone for my scores for Nina aforetimes (I can explain but won't bother) and be free of guilt because this is an easy 11. That piano loop alone rules so much it's an instant 10 and then it just gets better from there. My friend showed me this about ten years ago and I would play this on Youtube over and over idk it's mesmerizing
- Ochre - Whispers: 9 Now this is real glitch pop. IDM, even. (I don't know what I'm talking about please ignore)
- Okkyung Lee - One Bright Lazy Sunday Afternoon (You Whispered That Name: 4 This is really meandering and feels like the weird stuff we play to fill the airtime late at night on my college radio station. I know critics loved this album but I find it tedious so sorry to this lady
- Patea Maori Club - Poi E: 8 This was not what I was expecting at all from this song but it's a little weird and kind of a banger
- Prince - When Doves Cry: 10 The original "why he ourple", I must respect this man and this great song
- Rodan - The Everyday World of Bodies: 6 Good bit, very edgy, rock on Rodan
- Sampa the Great - Final Form: 8
- Santigold - Disparate Youth: 9 This rules, I like Santigold a lot and we will probably never rate her so I'm glad this is here
- Say Sue Me - Just Joking Around: 6 This is indie rock all right
- Sleater-Kinney - Jumpers: 7 This is the first song I have ever heard by this band I think and it's good
- Sleigh Bells - Crown on the Ground: 0 One of my biggest pet peeves is music that's distorted in this specific way that sounds like listening through a broken speaker, and coupled with how repetitive it is, that makes this incredibly annoying and there is nothing enjoyable about it. Update: yeah I hate this it's obnoxious and unbearable
- Stevie Wonder - Superstition: 10 It's an alltimer. I do not need to elaborate.
- Sultans Of Ping F.C. - Where's Me Jumper?: 1 1. no 2. these lyrics are horrible and also can this guy not sing or is this a bit he's doing 3. no
- Susumu Hirasawa - Byakkoya no Musume: 4 Huh, pretty weird and I don't remember this being in Paprika but sure it's alright. Update: the novelty wears off quickly nvm I don't like this
- Tablo - Try (ft. BUMKEY): 7 The one dude's vocals are weird but the other guy sounds good so sure why not
- The Blue Nile - The Downtown Lights: 9 This is sophistipop [citation needed] wait nvm it really is, that rules
- The Capricorns - The New Sound: 8 This is bubblegrunge [citation needed] Update: why did I write this, what a dumb comment. I was expecting indie folk though and got something very different so that much is true
- The Cleaners From Venus - Wivenhoe Bells (II): 5 surreal
- The J. Arthur Keenes Band - The Doors: 3 I don't like this kind of "whimsical" 60s-sounding pop and this is too long for what it is, but it's cool that this guy is from Oakville, Ontario that's not that far from me
- The Kings - This Beat Goes On / Switchin To Glide (Original Radio Segue): 6 At first I was going to do a bit about the Talking Heads, but then thought "wait I have heard this on the radio before as a kid wtf they're Canadian and also from Oakville like the guy from the song before this that's wild"
- The Middle East - Blood: 8 this is pretty
- The Mike Flowers Pops - Wonderwall: 1 Anyway, here's a guy doing a bit that's not very funny and got old fast
- The Naked And Famous - Punching In A Dream: 9 This is bait for me (2010s alternative electro hipster crap) and it worked dammit
- The Naked And Famous - Hearts Like Ours: 8 This is bait for me (2010s alternative electro hipster crap) and it worked dammit [2]
- Ulver - Hymne III - Wolf & Hatred: 10 this rocks
- Vengaboys - We Like To Party!: 10 As a kid this song got stuck in my head and I have a vivid memory of being in class and thinking it was not only a dumb song, but *the* archetypal, Platonic ideal of a dumb and valid pop song (I didn't use those words because I was a kid but it was along those lines). Now I can say that at long last, I understand: sometimes we simply like to party, and that's okay.
- Walrus - Dyed: 6 This is dream pop [citation needed]
- Xiu Xiu - The Call: 2 I have tried to force myself to like this band for many years and it's not going to happen. Extra point because Jamie Stewart seems like a good guy, too bad I don't like his music
