  1. Hiding in the trunk of a car had seemed like a
  2. good idea. He'd chosen this car because the trunk was
  3. empty. All the other trunks were filled with suitcases, luggage,
  4. and family gifts. Each was a sad legacy of a family
  5. story brought to a halt too soon. Some would stutter
  6. back into a semblance of their former lives; others
  7. wouldn't.
  8.
  9. All of the occupied trunks were a risk. Even if
  10. Clark had been able to fit into them, the last thing he
  11. wanted was to face a trunk opened by a traumatized
  12. soldier's family with kids in tow.
  13.
  14. This car was empty and sterile. It smelled like a
  15. rental. There was a risk that someone would come to
  16. open their trunk before the pursuit was called off, but
  17. it was at least less likely to be someone with kids.
  18. The thought that the car might be driven by a
  19. maniac had never occurred to him.
  20. The sound of a woman cursing from the front seat
  21. was punctuated by sudden changes in direction as she
  22. spun her wheels quickly on the concrete of the parking
  23. lot.
  24.
  25. All Clark could do was hold himself still in the
  26. trunk with one hand on the broken latch.
