  1. Suddenly she saw movement in her peripheral vision, and looked up in time to see some kind of lizardy snaky thing crouching atop one of the storage containers on a high shelf. She had an impression of teeth—two sets, actually, a smaller set housed without the larger, as if the thing had two mouths—as well as spindly arms and legs, and a long tail. Definitely not a rat, or any other kind of vermin she’d seen in the Lodge.
  2. Before she could get a good look at the creature it leaped from the shelf toward Hugo. Landing on his shoulders, it gripped onto his coveralls with nasty-looking claws, then sank its teeth into the soft, exposed flesh of his neck. He screeched as it began tearing at him with startling speed and ferocity, and screamed as blood gushed from the freshly created wound. Dropping his pad he reached behind him with both hands in an attempt to dislodge the creature, but its tail whipped first one way, then the other, smacking his hands away as it continued its assault.

  5. Dropping her pad she stepped forward and raised her hands, intending to grab the creature, tear it off Hugo, and hurl it away. Before she could take hold of the thing, the pustules on its back erupted, spraying black snot-like goo. The foul substance splattered her hands, and she cried out in pain. They felt as if they were on fire, and she flapped them in a frantic attempt to shake off the acidic slime.
  6. Holes appeared as the stuff ate its way into her skin, and it refused to be dislodged. Still, she continued flapping her hands, and as she did she saw that Hugo’s motions were slowing. He stopped spinning, and no longer attempted to reach back and grab hold of the small monster ravaging his neck. His eyes glazed over, his features went slack, and as she watched the skin of his face and hands began to resemble the creature’s flesh—liquid-filled pustules, black patches of rot… Hugo began coughing violently, then wheezing, as if he could no longer draw breath. His body convulsed, and he fell to the floor.

  9. The pain in Opal’s hands grew so intense that it was difficult for her to think about anything else. She looked at her hands, and through the black goo caught glimpses of white that she thought might be bone. She looked away quickly. A voice shouted in her mind then, and she was so consumed by the agony in her acid-eaten hands that at first she didn’t recognize it as her own.
  10. Run, you dumb bitch!
  11. That struck her as an extremely fine idea, and she turned to do just that when she heard the creature cry out. After only a couple of steps she felt it slam into her back. The impact knocked her forward, and as she fell she instinctively put out her hands to catch herself. But when they hit the floor she screamed as the acid-weakened bones shattered.
