  1. • Why was a cheap supply of labour needed?
  2. • In the new world they had an environment where they could grow the Sugar, Tobacco, Cocoa, Coffee and Cotton that people in Europe would pay very high prices for. But growing them was very labour intensive, especially sugar. It required many workers and the work was back-breaking, so the money they earned would soon have to be paid to any workers employed. So initially they used the indigenous peoples either bought or captured/imprisoned. But this was far from ideal given the likelihood of rebellion and the poor work output.

  4. With the Portuguese trading posts already well established in West Africa which was home to a well established slave trade, it made sense to start importing slave labour. 5. • What alternatives were there to slaves?
  6. • Indentured servants.
  7. • Why were slaves such a popular option?
  8. • Slavery was so popular because people didn't want to slave around all day doing work on their fields, so they got Africans to do it for them. Also they didn't have to pay for the slaves and people in their own countries wouldn't want to help and wouldn't what to do it for them. They thought the slaves were perfectly strong and healthy; so they could do their work better then them. :)

  16. • What were conditions like on the slavers?
  17. • The slaves were usually very closely packed. On the ships the smell was so potent many people couldn't breathe under the deck. The slaves had to sleep on flat wooden surfaces, which lead to getting a cut back and head. They were offered very little food. If they tried to do anything out of line they would be flogged. Many tried to commit suicide.
