  1. Scene: Earlier today, Chad has discovered Elly's hidden fruit and vegetable garden in the courtyard. Accusing her of hiding food, he makes a huge scene and trashes the garden. With the other church survivors gathering outside, he calls into question whether Elly should be the one who rations the food.
  2.
  3. Elly tearfully insists that she was only waiting for the produce to finish growing and ripening before sharing it with everyone. Chad, flying into a rage, grabs her by the hood of her habit and calls her a "lying little cunt." At this moment, Naomi -- just returning from a supply run -- walks into the courtyard and witnesses the confrontation. Without thinking twice, she unholsters her sidearm and shoots Chad in the kneecap. Then with Chad lying injured and screaming on the ground, she straddles him, puts the gun to his head, and threatens to murder him. Ultimately, with Elly's pleading, she refrains from doing it. Chad is brought to the infirmary for Elly to treat his injury.
  4.
  5. The scene has left the church survivors quite shaken -- and Elly enraged at Naomi.
  6.
  7. Naomi disappears and is nowhere to be found. Later that night, Grey finally finds her.
  8.
  9. ----
  10. <I ascend the clock tower and walk out onto the roof. Just as I thought she would be, Naomi is there on the rooftop, sitting at the edge and peering through her binoculars. Keeping her watch.
  11.
  12. I approach her slowly. She tenses up but doesn't acknowledge my presence. So I sit down on the edge with her, lacing my legs through the guardrail.>
  13.
  14. Grey
  15. I just wanted to let you know... we all understand why you shot him. He was acting erratic... dangerous, even. No one wants to oust you from leadership over it.
  16.
  17. <Naomi harumphs.>
  18.
  19. Naomi
  20. That's too bad.
  21.
  22. <I take a look at the city streets below. There's even more of them out than usual tonight, but the bulk of the horde is a few blocks off.>
  23.
  24. Naomi
  25. How's Elly doing?
  26.
  27. Grey
  28. You don't want to know how Chad's doing?
  29.
  30. <Naomi puts her binoculars down and looks at me for the first time since I came out.>
  31.
  32. Naomi
  33. To be honest, I don't really care how he's doing.
  34.
  35. <I have to laugh at that. Naomi chuckles a little too, despite herself.>
  36.
  37. Grey
  38. You know... Chad has been laying in the infirmary all day, rambling on and on about how everyone's out to get him. About how evil you are. How evil Elly is. And Elly... she just smiles. Puts on her brave face and tends to his wounds. Not a single complaint.
  39.
  40. Naomi
  41. That's Elly.
  42.
  43. Grey
  44. I don't know how she puts up with him.
  45.
  46. Naomi
  47. I don't know how she puts up with any of us.
  48.
  49. <Naomi pulls her binoculars to her eyes again and resumes watching the horde.>
  50.
  51. Naomi
  52. Has she said anything? Is she still mad at me?
  53.
  54. Grey
  55. Naomi... she's still really shaken up--
  56.
  57. Naomi
  58. Is she still mad, Grey?
  59.
  60. Grey
  61. She... she says she hates you.
  62.
  63. Naomi
  64. Good.
  65.
  66. <Of all the responses she could have had to the news, I certainly wasn't expecting this one. I look at her like she's a space alien. Though I don't say anything, she can sense my bafflement.>
  67.
  68. Naomi
  69. I shot an innocent man out of anger today. If she didn't hate me for that, she wouldn't be Elly. There has to be something good left in this world. Do you understand?
  70.
  71. Grey
  72. Naomi...
  73.
  74. <She puts her binoculars down again and leans her head back, looking up at the stars, trying to collect her thoughts. She moves as if to speak a couple times but stops herself. It becomes clear that she is having some difficulty forming the words. But finally she seems to find them.>
  75.
  76. Naomi
  77. I've been thinking about this for a while, even before what happened today. And Elly... Elly is the one good thing I've ever had in my life. I have to protect the goodness inside of her. No matter the cost. So let her hate me. I hope she does.
  78.
  79. Grey
  80. You can't possibly think you deserve to be hated just because you put Chad back in line.
  81.
  82. <Naomi brings her head down again. There's a long silence between us, punctuated only by the far-off moaning of a hundred thousand corpses. For the first time since I've known her, all the harshness has drained out of her eyes. They're soft now, contemplative... damp. Sad.>
  83.
  84. Naomi
  85. No... I deserve to be hated for a lot more than that, Grey. And if she doesn't hate me... if she lets me in... I can only--
  86.
  87. <She trails off. Before I can say anything, Naomi stands up and dusts off her slacks before handing me the binoculars.>
  88.
  89. Naomi
  90. Here. Keep watch for me. I need some sleep.
  91.
  92. Grey
  93. Oh... uh, okay. But do you maybe wanna... talk... a little?
  94.
  95. <Without another word, Naomi turns and walks back inside.>
