  17.
  18. Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights (ICIRR) and Service Employees International Union (SEIU) used marshals and police to assault participants in the Mayday March. Marshals obstructed groups of marchers, blocking them from being able to walk or to pass on either side of the street, and directed police to kettle specific groups of people whose messaging was not convenient. Eventually, marshals signaled out Ze (Jose Garcia), an undocumented organizer and outspoken critic of ICIRR. ICIRR and SEIU marshals physically restrained him and signaled the police to arrest him and Anne Wooton. Ze is also currently fighting his deportation proceedings. This is a politically motivated attack intended to suppress dissent and to control people’s autonomous participation in a public event.
  19.
  20. Join Moratorium on Deportations Campaign (MDC) to show solidarity for all those pushed, tackled and intimidated during the march and to hold the police and so called social justice organizations accountable. We cannot accept that any organization would resort to the use of state violence as a way to control a public event or people’s political ideas and expressions.

  27. June 2013: "A brief note on the action, a note of caution for immigrant organizers who are supporters of this organization — if you change your mind and begin criticizing them, asking questions or demanding to know why they are blatantly lying about policies they promote, they will turn you over to the police. When a group of ten people arrived and asked to deliver the poop award, ICIRR staff threatened to call the police. We reminded them of what they already knew: that the group included undocumented organizers, and one participant is currently under deportation proceedings — calling the cops is calling La Migra, that is the reality of that threat. We continued to wait on the sidewalk in front of the building, and ICIRR did indeed call a police unit, who arrived with their armored vehicle ready to deal with the “public threat” of some flyers, a poop and a set of critical questions. Grassroots migrant justice organizers criticize the largest, most well-funded and politically connected “immigrant rights” NGO in the Midwest? For the second time this year, they called the cops on us."

  92. Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights (ICIRR) is a mainstream reformist NGO exerting total control over people's participation in Mayday Chicago. Together with SEIU, their marshals pushed, bullied and blocked "certain" groups, called the police to kettle us, and then called the cops on our organizers who were trying to flyer at the march. In the video you will see Ze, an undocumented organizer who is under deportation proceedings, trying to pass out flyers denouncing immigration reform and the complicity of ICIRR in pushing for this horrible bill; he is then quickly grabbed by police. Anne Meredith was also arrested. We had been flyering heavily at the march and carried several banners against immigration reform. A large anti-authoritarian contingent arrived together and were immediately kettled when we started trying to march. cops pushing and restraining us said very clearly "they (meaning the orgs "in charge") told us not to let you march". that didn't work, mostly because of too many people and too much movement, cops ended up tripping in their own bikes. A short while later, they grabbed Ze and Anne Meredith. follow moratorium on deportations on facebook or see www.moratoriumondeportations.org

  118. 6. /// STATEMENT FROM CHICAGO IWW MAY DAY EVENT ORGANIZERS /// May1Chicago.org ///
  119.
  120. Organizers of the IWW Chicago May Day 2014 events will be present and have issued a call out for all Red and Black Brigade participants to come to this event, show support for their comrades, and to stand against SEIU's and ICIRR's unacceptable actions.
  121.
  122. Here's our current statement regarding this event:
  123.
  124. Though both arrestees have been released and only one is facing charges, the arrests of the May Day 2014 march were politically motivated and are completely unforgivable.
  125.
  126. Jose "Ze" Garcia and Anne Wooton were singled out, surrounded, and restrained by SEIU and ICIRR to be arrested by Chicago Police Department. Ze was released without charges, where Anne is now facing a misdemeanor charge.
  127.
  128. Ze is an outspoken advocate against ICIRR's reformist policies, as well as one who spreads awareness of their tactics against dissenters. They are in the midst of a deportation hearing and we at the IWW believe this to be a major factor in ICIRR and SEIU's targeting them.
  129.
  130. Ze and Anne were both participants in the red and black brigade contingent of the march and are supported fully by all organizers and participants. We all bore witness to SEIU and ICIRR's "march marshals" surrounding us as we attempted to fight back against these obviously targeted arrests. They subsequently directed the rest of the march to "Keep moving" until it was just the Red and Black surrounded by police.
  131.
  132. SEIU, ICIRR, we know which side you're on.
  133.
  134. We hope to have a chance to speak at this event, though we ourselves did not organize it. A show of solidarity from everyone in the Red and Black is absolutely necessary. The event is hosted by the Moratorium on Deportations Campaign.
  135.
  136. Please meet at 10:00am at 36 S. Wabash (ICIRR HQ) for a press conference at 10:30.
  137.
  138. Show up. Be heard.
