Getting to 900:
The easiest way to get to 900 is by just doing stuff, strikes can be a bit faster but any content is good content (campaigns are good!) for getting to 900. I highly recommend AGAINST doing any ranked PVP until you get to 900.


Getting to 950:
Here you're better off just doing a powerful gear (any tier) and then using token hand ins (certain vendors will give you gear at your average) or random content that doesn't reward a powerful to get +0 drops. If you're near the end of the week then you can do any pinnacles or powerfuls to further boost your power.
Powerful tier 1 is a +3 compared to your average power level, tier 2 is a +4 and tier 3 is a +5.
Deathbringer quest is shadowkeep rewards a +5 exotic power weapon (deathbringer).
Avoid doing any activity that rewards a pinnacle drop until you are close to 950 or it is the end of the week (or if you don't care).


Xur:
Once a week xur spawns, he offers a gun and a piece of armour for each class. He also offers a fated engram which will give you an exotic you don't have from the year 1 and year 2 exotics. https://wherethefuckisxur.com/ will tell you where xur is of a week.


Content to unlock:
Menagerie. You might not do it often yet, but you wanna start earning imperials asap. Later on it'll also be what you run to get Izanagi's catalyst. Forges are useful too. Vex offensive is also pretty important to unlock for easy access to powerful rewards and season specific loot.


Exotic weapons to hunt:
Whisper of the worm or izanagi's burden are the most important quest exotics to get in the game for PVE. Izanagi's being the most powerful weapon right now for general content and boss damage.
NOTE: Most guides for izanagi's tell you to go to the forge to find the box, HOWEVER you just need to go to Ada-1 to get the box, it also requires forsaken. An important thing to note is that nowadays the majority of quest exotics that aren't secrets are started at vendors.


Pinnacle/Ritual weapons to get:
Wendigo, 21% Delirium, Edgewise, Recluse and Mountaintop are super important. Recluse and mountaintop require you to get to 2100 glory, so I'd recommend working on those when you hit 900/start playing comp PVP, I also recommend doing this primarily in the freelance queue as due to skill matching you'll have much easier games. 21% Delirium is a long grind, but very worthwhile. Edgewise is a situational gun, it has useful perks, especially if you like grenades.


After these:
Most quest exotics are pretty good, notably thorn is used often in pvp and some people still use ace of spades. Warlocks might want to start working on worldline as one of the end game techniques for warlock is very strong and revolves around using swords as your power weapon.
Working on higher difficulty nightfalls will help fill out your exotic armour collections.
If you're enjoying pvp then getting your hands on a snapshot sights sniper with something like no distractions, moving target or opening shot would be good.
A spike grenade launcher is useful to have, they're currently very strong. Auto-loading holster makes them very useful in pve.
Jotunn will take 5 weeks of armoury bounties, but it is a very useful weapon to get (pick up the quest from Ada-1).
Divinity is worth picking up too, you get it from a quest related to GoS.


Getting to 960:
Just do pinnacles. If you need an energy weapon then do the raid, if you need armour then do the dungeon. Only power weapon drops come from the other pinnacle drops (ib, nightfall or nightmare hunts).


Alts:
If you get one character to 950 (particularly weapons) you can use collections to pull (pulling involves going to the collections tab and then creating a copy of the item by clicking on it) white gear to get to 900. You can use xur to pull a 950 piece of armour for that respective class and then use the season pass to pull every other piece of gear to get that character to 950.
