- My experience with culture shock
- Every person has experience with culture shock, and I am no exception, because I also have experience with culture shock. Although I have lived in the United States for almost one year, I still often feel homesick and I miss my family. When I first came to the U.S., I was very comfortable. Because everything was new, everything was interesting for me. I enjoyed my independence from my parents. I also enjoyed experiencing new food and making new friends. Although everything was strange, I enjoyed the new experiences.
- Soon I got used to many differences. Even though I was used to them, I still wasn’t comfortable. Little by little I grew tired of the differences. Because the things in America weren’t new to me anymore, the differences weren’t interesting, but boring. As a result,I began to miss things in Indonesia, such as food, my friends, and the warm climate. I became depressed and homesick. I stayed in my room, because I was tired of speaking English all the time. Even though I studied, my grades weren’t so good.
- As a result of these problems, I visited my advisor. He told me about culture shock. I learned that every person has this kind of experience and it can’t be avoided. I learned that culture shock is universal but temporary. My advisor told me I must keep busy and talk about my culture shock with my friends. This was good advice. As a result, my culture shock decreased. In spite of the fact that I sometimes still miss my life in Indonesia, I don’t feel as depressed as before.
