  3. ---
  4. Homework: Read p. 173 and 174
  5.
  6. Remember: “finally” introduces the last supporting detail or reason, it is NOT a conclusion signal
  7.
  8. If we don’t know 100% whether a source is correct, it’s important to identify the source with something like “according to”.
  9. If I just write, “Gregory’s mother never wrote to him or sent him birthday cards,” I’m telling you that I am absolutely sure about this statement.
  10.
  11. We don’t need “according to” for generally known facts: “Earth is round.”
  12.
  13. It’s incorrect to say “according to me”. If it’s your opinion, then use an opinion signal. If you’re telling us a fact you believe, just say the statement.
  14. ---
  15. Remember from Friday: just because someone says “in my opinion”, it doesn’t mean it’s an opinion.
  16. “In my opinion, water freezes at 10C.”
  17. (I’m wrong about 2 things: It’s not an opinion, and water doesn’t freeze at 10 degrees.)
  18. ---
  19. controversy = a disagreement between groups of people who each talk about their opinion
  20. controversial = adjective from “controversy”
  21.
  22. “Controversial” questions:
  23. - Should violent video games be allowed?
  24. - Should it be legal to buy guns?
  25. - Should it be legal to buy drugs? (or specific drugs such as marijuana)
  26. - Is milk healthy? Should we recommend that people drink milk?
  27. - Were humans created by aliens?
  28. - Should same-sex marriage be legal?
  29. - Should abortion be legal?
  30. - What should the age of consent be? (This is the age at which you can legally consent to sex.)
  31. - Should cell phones be allowed in classrooms?
  32. - Should people be allowed to use cell phones while driving?
  33. - Should students be allowed to eat in classrooms?
  34. ---
  35. Choose a controversial topic from the list or your own ideas, and write an outline with 3-4 reasons to support your view on this topic.
  36. ---
  37. Homework: finish your outline if you didn’t in class.
