- Small talk: small conversation, often with people you don’t know very well
- It’s polite to show that you are paying attention to someone who is talking to you.
- ---
- Echo questions: These can rise or fall in intonation, because you’re not really asking a new question. You use the auxiliary verb that’s normal if you make the statement a question, but you don’t have to complete the whole question.
- part 1 - Complete the conversations with the correct echo questions, and then practice saying them with rising or falling intonation.
- 1 Do you?
- 2 Does she?
- 3 Did you?
- 4 Is it?
- ---
- Echo questions only show that I’m interested in what you said.
- If I’m surprised, I ask a question (rising intonation) with the words in the opposite order.
- I like pop music.
- You do? I thought you hated it.
- If I already know this and want to agree with you, I make a statement (falling intonation) in the opposite order:
- I like pop music.
- You do.
- ---
- Echo words: repeat key words (not a full question or statement). This often shows that I’m surprised about that information. Intonation can be rising or falling.
- Write (and practice) echo words for the conversations part 2
- 1 Italy / Next week
- 2 Two hours
- 3 A new job / Harry
- 4 Yesterday / Sophia
- ---
- Homework: write five follow-up wh- questions to the statement, “I went to the cinema yesterday.”
