"I don't think so. A bear was curious about us, he'd mosey on over to see. They aren't that afraid of people this far out. They don't see that many. He was nervous, he'd just leave." "Who else is up here?" "Might be some poachers." "Poachers?" "I found a dead bear just before you got here. Something other than scavengers had been at him. There were knife marks
on the pelt. A couple hours away from here, to the south."

"What do we do?" "Wait a bit." The sensation of being watched didn't abate, but Sloane couldn't sense anybody who might be the cause."

"There would be lot of small game around, but those kinds of critters didn't trip his radar. A bear wouldn't likely be hunkered down and watching
them-they didn't have such good eyesight that they'd be able to tell much from a few hundred meters off, and there was nothing
