The Knight of the Dragon was camped before the main gate, to stop any supplies getting through. He’d besieged and blockaded them so long they were white and pale with hunger; but no one could get rid of him: there were some three hundred knights inside who’d endured the siege and the suffering for a long, long time, but none dared don a helm and go and do battle with him, for he feared no one; such was his faith in the Devil that he’d vowed and sworn he’d burn them all with the dragon unless the maiden of Montesclaire surrendered to him her body, her land and her people. No amount of gold or silver would buy him off: he would seize and burn them all with the fire that burst from the dragon’s maw
