  1. It was mid-day when he stood at the giant wooden doors, decorated with numerous yet connected murals to hunters of old. In his hand, he held the letter of acceptance he had received just two hours ago. His blue eyes beamed with wonder and his grin stretched from ear to ear. This was the day his dreams would come true, he just knew it. He would finally become a Beast Hunter.
  2.
  3. He approached a desk next to the giant wood gates where a middle-aged man sat, a bin with a large stack of paper sat to his left and a fountain pen with matching ink pot to his right, all of which were incredibly neat and orderly.
  4.
  5. “Excuse me,” the boy said, sliding his acceptance letter on to the stone of the desk. “My name is Wynn Kardos of Midrah, where do I go to get my guild identification?”
  6.
  7. The man took the letter and brought it close to his spectacled eyes, reading it carefully. Wynn stood there while the old man read the letter over, waiting for a response. After about a minute, the man looked up.
  8.
  9. “Before you can get in to the guild proper, lad,” said the old man. His local accent was thick like the syrup the city exported. “You need to take a written test. Says so right here.” He pointed to the ending paragraph of the letter. “Did you not see that, lad?”
  10.
  11. Wynn’s face flushed, rubbing the back of his head and looking away from the entrance officer. “Not exactly,” he said. “I… kinda just read the first few lines and got too excited to read the rest…”
  12.
  13. The old man rubbed his temples with his index fingers and gave a heavy sigh; this seemed to be the case for many young men who got their acceptance letters. He called over one of the guards stationed outside the wooden gates and told him to escort the young boy inside to the registration office.
  14.
  15. “Follow me,” said the guard to Wynn.
  16.
  17. They went through a regular sized door built in to the giant gates. There Wynn saw what would be his new home. The stone floor shined in the light of the hall, glass cases in the wall showed the various trophies from hunts of the past as well as the many legendary weapons used by heroes of the Hunter’s Guild. Banners hung from the ceiling, all of which had the crossed swords guild crest emblazed upon them with the words “Wir als die jaeger, den Schwertern der Gotter” underneath. Guildsmen went about their business, dressed in their blue and white uniforms. Wynn saw humans, elves, dwarves, and demi-giants alike wander the halls of the guild. Sure, he had seen the other species in his home of Midrah in the east, but never in numbers so large.
  18.
  19. The guard took him to a door with the word “Registration Office” painted on it in bold, black letters.
  20. “’Ere you go, lad,” said the guard, opening the door. “Jus’ show ‘em that let’er and they’ll set that test righ’ up for you.”
  21. “Thank you, sir,” said Wynn, bowing to the guard. The guard seemed confused, but returned the bow nonetheless.
  22.
  23. The office was packed with various people, all the chairs were filled and a line of five people stood in front of the main desk. Among the people in the room, he saw many different flavors of aspiring Beast Hunter; from youngsters like him looking for adventure to people who wouldn't look out of place in his homeland's Knightly Order. So many people from equally numerous walks of life, were these to be his guildsmates? The very feeling made the fire in his heart soar, to fight beasts alongside great heroes all across Jormerra, what an honor!
  24.
  25. He took his place as sixth in line, behind a female elf in full samurai armor. She had an elvish blade strapped to her hip and a pole arm strapped to her back. She stood still as a stone pillar, her arms crossed over her chest. It looked like her patience was wearing thin, which was a rarity when it came to elves, thought Wynn. Maybe she was just anxious. Then again, so was Wynn.
  26. One-by-one, the line shortened. Wynn started biting his nails in anticipation.
