The rhino's front legs buckled. It sank onto its ruined haunches, confused and bleating in distress. Blood poured out of it like rainwater driven across asphalt by a push broom."

"A second blue beam slammed into the rhino, driving the end of its spine out of its body and obliterating more flesh. It screamed once. The rhino slumped in shock, framed by the long grass and the blue sky."
