Beyond the tree, fire burns. Through the haze of smoke, Vergil saw a form. It was distorted by heat, like a mirage or a faint memory. A charred body lay slumped on the ground. Vergil could hardly breathe.

“D-Dante?”

“Yes,” said the demon. “That is your brother.”

[...]

Vergil approached the charred body of Dante and leaned in close. He was still breathing. That was good. Vergil held Dr. Kratos over him and burned the ash away.

[...]

Dante slowly returned to health. His breaths were more full, his flesh was clean. Vergil continued to hover Dr. Kratos over his fallen brother. Until at last, Dante opened his eyes.

“Vergil?” he said.

“Dante. Can you stand?”

Dante stood on shaky legs. “I think so.”

“Good,” said Vergil. He was glad to see Dante back. He truly was.
