- '06 Community Plans regarding discord:
- Poll results can be found here: http://strawpoll.me/5470176/r
- 1. Everyone should at the very least make a discord account - I think some of the people that don't want to try to switch haven't made an account yet. If I'm wrong, then so be it, but we should all at least make an account for the 2nd and 3rd points.
- 2. We use discord for voice chat -
- Skype doesn't work at all/is annoying for a voice chat within a big group, Discord does it much better with the way the voice channels are oriented. You have to actively join a channel in discord when you want to talk while in Skype, voice chatting is a more passive action and there is no way to only call certain members of a group without bugging the rest of the people.
- We have rarely EVER as a group had calls and talked to people and I think that is a serious flaw in our community approach. I for one have talked to FocusSight64 twice, I have known him for over a year now! I've never talked to DsS, and despite that probably being my own fault, I think it is partly because as a group we don't tend to do any voice chats. So far I've voice chatted in Discord a lot with mark (nintendofan28) and have gotten to know him really well through that. I'd argue I know him better than the majority of the rest of our community and that's a real shame considering he first started running 06 only a few months ago.
- Part of the reason I like the idea of Discord a bunch is because of this experience and I hope the rest of our group can recognize the value of voice chatting. I'd love to have a chat with Markus, Ricky, Cyd, and the people I met at SGDQ like Dax, Ouro, and Silver. I feel like I don't know all of you guys as well as I should and I hope some of you all can relate to that.
- 3. We use the 06 chat channel for announcements and exposure -
- Discord chat is a great way to expose yourself to the rest of the sonic community, plain and simple. Any member of the sonic speedrunning server can click on the 06 chat and see what we're up to just as I occasionally pop into the 2D sonic channel and now know the names of prominent classic sonic runners. This is priceless if we want 06 to grow as it creates an unprecedented amount of accessibility for people that like speedrunning sonic games to explore a possible interest in 06, I've made this point many times. However, since the poll had 33% of people not wanting to switch, I don't think we should switch to chatting in discord at the moment.
- We will keep the discord chat as an outlet for announcements, PBs, ILs, WRs, tutorials, races, and anything else you think deserves a mention. This means if you get a new 1:15 sonic no msg PB, FEEL FREE TO POST IT ON THERE. It doesn't matter how good the time is or if you think it doesn't deserve to be mentioned, just put it on there, it doesn't bug anyone. If there are any world records, I will post them on the announcements channel but it's the job of the runner to post his/her new PB or Ring Attack or Score or Time or glitch video or anything else. The idea is to show the other sonic games and their runners how active 06 is so that they might want to hop on the hype train. We show them the best and most recent accomplishments of our runners -- basically the highlights of the community -- so they see us in action and it inspires them to pick up the game. I can't just constantly post everyone else's times, then it just looks like I'm the only one in the group and that I have a stupid unhealthy amount of enthusiasm (the stupid enthusiasm part is true lol). So make sure to post some cool shit up there, you'd be surprised at how many people are interested.
- We're only barely the third most popular sonic game, it's time to solidify that place.
