  1. >You heft your backpack
  2. >It is filled with the spoils of skirmishes, looting, and death
  3. >It’s also filled with sausage
  4. >Mm mm, sausage
  5. >You look around at the veritable BURNING all around you
  6. >It’s kind of beautiful in a way
  7. >You know, if it weren’t so hot
  8. >You’d take off this armor, but after that one Bloodsucker incident, it didn’t seem like such a good idea
  9. >You make your way into the charred remains of a house
  10. >You toss a bolt
  11. >A massive gout of flame spews up a few feet away from you where it lands
  12. >Perhaps you should go around that
  13. >You sift through blackened, crumbling wood, looking for anything that could be of use
  14. >Neat, a dead body
  15. >Some wandering Monolith moron must’ve gotten too close to the fire
  16. >Maybe he just had a fire fetish
  17. >Regardless, you clear away some of the burnt debris and look in awe upon what you’ve found
  18. >Well, it’s less awe, more surprise
  19. >He’s holding a Wrenched in his hands
  20. >You didn’t expect one of those to be around here
  21. >You haven’t nearly been crushed by a Vortex yet
  22. >You pry the strange, swiss-cheese-esque artifact from his hands, flicking off a few fingers that decided to come with it
  23. >Maybe you could finally use that Moonlight you’ve been toting around all this time without feeling sick
  24. >Maybe not
  25. >This thing was quite ugly
  26. >But some smarty pants back in the Skadovsk said that it’s like a radiation sponge, so maybe he’s right
  27. >Perhaps beauty is in the eye of the beholder
  28. >You hear your radio fizzling
  29. >Weird
  30. >It’s usually got such clear reception
  31. >You take it out and give it a shake
  32. >”*kzzt* -ion…*zzzt* …-ter. I rep-*kzzch* -ake co-…”
  33. >U wot
  34. >You give it some good ol’ percussive maintenance
  35. >Still nothing
  36. >Piece of junk
  37. >You continue your looting
  38. >Ammunition, sausage, vodka
  39. >Pretty standard stuff
  40. >You’re glad some of it was salvageable
  41. >Mr. Monolith here took quite the crisping, so maybe luck was on your side today
  42.
  43. >Your heavy breathing through your gasmask is the only sound you hear as you continue your work
  44. >That and the sizzling of the Burner anomaly nearby
  45. >You could probably cook up a mean meal here if it weren’t so dangerous
  46. >How long have you been out here searching anyway?
  47. >Time’s seemed to slip your mind at the moment as you slot your newfound Wrenched into one of your artifact holsters
  48. >Along with the Moonlight you found a couple days back
  49. >Today was a good day
  50. >In fact, it was so good that you don’t even notice the sky starting to turn colors it shouldn’t be
  51. >You’re only pulled away from the task at hand when you hear the sound of low, rumbling, distorted thunder
  52. >You look up through the hole in the burnt roof
  53. >Oh fucking hell
  54. >The day just got a whole less good
  55. >Thanks to your shitty radio and general incompetence, you were about to be caught in an emission
  56. >People caught during an emission don’t generally live to tell the tale
  57. >In fact, you’re pretty sure they just cease to exist
  58. >Well
  59. >Fuck
  60. >You rush outside and look around frantically for a place to seek shelter
  61. >THERE’S NOTHING BUT BURNT BUILDINGS HERE, DAMN IT
  62. >You start running
  63. >You aren’t sure where to, but you’re hoping you get lucky
  64. >There’s no way you could outrun an emission, but maybe you could find shelter somewhere
  65. >Anywhere
  66. >As you sprint, you catch something shimmering in the air out of the corner of your eye
  67. >You turn your head and look as what looks to be a perfect sphere distorts the air and world around it
  68. >Smarty pants back in Skadovsk told you about these
  69. >”Space Anomalies” he called them
  70. >He said they were rifts in time and space
  71. >He also said they were dangerous and could trap people inside
  72. >But at this point, POSSIBLE death was a much better alternative to CERTAIN death
  73. >You alter your course and beeline towards the anomaly
  74. >As you hear the sounds of thunder and the world begins to tremble, you fling yourself into the sphere
  75.
  76. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-nl-ITnF1N8
  77. >You awaken slowly, eyes cracking open and adjusting to the harsh light
  78. >Were you alive?
  79. >A crystalline city can be viewed through what appears to be a window
  80. >Yeah
  81. >You were definitely dead
  82. >There’s no way a comfortable bed like this exists in the Zone
  83. >And there’s no way such an intact and… Colorful city like the one you can see, exists there either
  84. >On the bright side
  85. >At least there was an afterlife
  86. >You sigh and go to grab the covers, but stop as you see your hand
  87. >Or rather, the lack of one
  88. >All you see is a green hoof
  89. >A hoof
  90. >Hoof
  91. >It repeats over and over in your mind
  92. >You can’t even believe what you’re seeing
  93. >You wiggle it in front of your face
  94. >No, it’s still there
  95. >You look around again, a feeling of confusion creeping over you
  96. >There’s a mirror in the corner of the room
  97. >You pull yourself out of the bed and land on the floor
  98. >You try and walk normally, but it’s as if your legs don’t work the right way anymore
  99. >You find yourself constantly at gravity’s will, being brought forward and landing on the ground with a thud every time
  100. >>ou find that it’s easier to walk on all fours, with your hooves
  101. >You almost dread seeing what you’ve become in the mirror
  102. >But you close your eyes and soldier on, taking a step in front of the mirror and opening one eye
  103. >What you see makes them widen like dinner plates
  104. >You’re
  105. >A pony?
  106. >Small horse?
  107. >Was that why everything seemed way bigger?
  108. >You were considerably shorter than you were before
  109. >And you didn’t resemble a human at all
  110. >Did that Space Anomaly turn you into a mutant?
  111. >You’ve got green skin
  112. >Or… Well, fur?
  113. >WHAT HAPPENED
  114. >WHAT IS THIS PLACE
  115. >You let out a yell
  116. >It’s more of a scream really, seeing as how YOUR VOICE DIDN'T SOUND THE SAME
  117. >You run back to the bed and look out the window, pressing your face against it
  118. >Everywhere you can see these things
  119. >The ponies
  120. >The room’s door slams open
  121. >”What? What, what’s wrong?!”
  122.
  123. >In the doorway stands a somewhat panicked looking rose colored pony
  124. >You turn and look at her
  125. >Upon seeing you, she sighs relievedly
  126. >”Oh, you’re alright, thank goodness…”
  127. >You see her trotting over and you instinctively start to back away
  128. >You reach for your holster, but it’s not there
  129. >You’re completely naked
  130. >You wonder how you would handle a gun with these hooves of yours
  131. >You feel yourself being lifted up into the air by some sort of force
  132. >You struggle about to no avail
  133. >You’re engulfed in some strange energy coming from that pony’s horn
  134. >She seems to be checking you over
  135. >”Mhmm... You’re unhurt. Then what was all that screaming about?”
  136. >She sets you down on the bed, where you sit and eye her warily
  137. “Where am I?”
  138. >”Where are you? Why, you’re in the Crystal Empire of course!”
  139. “The Crystal Empire? And where’s that?”
  140. >”We’re located in Northern Equestria, why?”
  141. >Equestria
  142. >What the fuck was this place?
  143. >A land full of tiny horses?
  144. >And now you were the tiny horse
  145. “How did I get here?”
  146. >May as well ask the most important question, right?
  147. >”I’m not sure. One of Somby’s stewards found you unconscious with some strange objects around you.”
  148. “My artifacts!”
  149. >You jump up and nearly fall off the bed
  150. >The pony looks at you curiously
  151. >”Those things were yours?”
  152. “Yes!”
  153. >”Little one, there was a knife amongst them, are you sure they were yours?”
  154. “Yes! Where are they? I need them!”
  155. >She’s just looking at you confused
  156. >”I believe Somby is currently studying them.”
  157. “Who’s Somby? Where can I find him?”
  158. >Somby’s just my nickname for my husband, Sombra. He’s the King of the Crystal Empire.”
  159. >Kings?
  160. >Ponies?
  161. >All this is just too much
  162. >”If you’d like, I can take you to meet him and we can go on a tour of your new home!”
  163. >Well that doesn’t sound too ba- wait what new home?
  164. “New home?”
  165. >”We checked our census records, and we didn’t find you in there anywhere.”
  166.
  167. >So now you’re trotting along with this pony
  168. >All the while she’s asking you a whole bunch of questions
  169. >”And what’s your name, sweetie?”
  170. “Anon.”
  171. >”Hm, what a nice name. My name is Radiant Hope. This confirms what we’ve found. We've no records of you ever living here in the Crystal Empire. Where are you from, Anon?”
  172. “Uh… Earth.”
  173. >”Hm, never heard of it before.”
  174. >WHAT
  175. >Was smarty pants right? Did the Space Anomaly really link to another dimension through a rift?
  176. >You try not to think about it
  177. >You’re actually surprised at how easy you’re taking to walking around on your hooves like this
  178. >And this castle was impeccable
  179. >Like, shit you missed Earth but this was WAY better than the Zone
  180. >And nopony had tried to shoot you yet
  181. >What?
  182. >You blink a few times and rub your head
  183. >No ONE had tried to shoot you yet
  184. >That was strange
  185. >You shake it off and follow alongside Hope
  186. >You see a few other ponies milling about, probably performing castle duties
  187. >”Somby should probably still be in his study. At least I hope he is. Finding anypony in this castle is difficult if you lose track of them.”
  188. >You stick a bit closer to her
  189. >As you head through the corridors, you eventually happen upon a set of lavish wooden doors
  190. >”He should be just in here.”
  191. >She knocks on the door before entering
  192. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6NgEVTj-52U
  193. >Sitting on a chair in front of a desk is a massive pony with a jet black mane
  194. >He appears to be wearing some sort of royal attire
  195. >He turns and greets the two of you with a warm smile
  196. >”Ah, I see that our guest is awake!”
  197. >You look past him, you see your artifacts sitting there on the desk
  198. >You worked hard for those
  199. >You gallop forward and jump for them
  200. >But you’re caught by one of his hooves
  201. >He pulls you close and ruffles your mane
  202. >”Quite the excitable one I see! I suppose I can spare ONE hug.”
  203. >You squirm as you try and get out of his grip
  204. “Lemme go! That stuff’s mine!”
  205. >He merely laughs
  206.
  207. >”I’m sure it is. I’m just giving them a look over. I’ve never seen anything quite like them here in the Crystal Empire. Well… Some of your things, anyway.”
  208. >He gives you back the two artifacts and the detector.
  209. >You look them over
  210. “There were more things, weren’t there?”
  211. >Radiant Hope chimes in
  212. >”Of course there were, but little fillies shouldn’t be wandering around with knives OR alcohol, for pony’s sake!”
  213. “I’m not little!”
  214. >Sombra pats your head
  215. >”Of course you aren’t. Now run along. Barnes, please escort little Anon here and make sure she doesn’t get lost. And don’t forget to pick up my son from school, if you would.”
  216. >A pony wearing a suit trots over and nods, speaking in a posh accent
  217. >”But of course, sir.”
  218. >He turns and opens the door for you
  219. >”After you, Miss Anon.”
  220. >She?
  221. >Miss?
  222. >You look at your body
  223. >You look down, between your legs
  224. >OH GOD
  225. >IT’S GONE
  226. >NO
  227. >FUCK
  228. >You’re just about to have a meltdown when Barnes nudges you along
  229. >”Please do come along Miss Anon, King Sombra and Lady Hope have much to discuss.”
  230. >BUT YOUR DICK
  231. >YOUR DICK IS GONE
  232. >AAAAAAAAAAAAAA
  233. >NO
  234. >You feel like you want to cry
  235. >But
  236. >Why?
  237. >That’s not typically the reaction you’d have to a situation like this
  238. >You shake your head hard
  239. “Hey, where are we going?”
  240. >”As His Lordship Sombra said, to pick up he and Lady Hope’s son, Crystal Dusk, from school. The King and Queen are busy ponies. I’m sure that you and he will get along fine.”
  241. >You don’t want to get along
  242. >You want to go home
  243. >Or
  244. >Do you?
  245. >How bad was this place, really?
  246. >There’s no raving lunatics trying to shoot you over their magical rock
  247. >No mutants trying to mind control you or suck your blood
  248. >And on top of that, everypony
  249. >Every ONE
  250. >Here seemed rather nice
  251. >It wasn’t that fake nice that everyone in the Zone had, where they’d be all happy and smiles, but secretly they had 17 guns pointed at you
  252.
  253. >You grumble a bit
  254. >You’re having trouble balancing these artifacts
  255. >You miss your cool backpack
  256. >And your vodka
  257. >Almost as if Barnes is reading your thoughts, you see a saddlebag come into view
  258. >”Here Miss Anon, you appear to be having some difficulty.”
  259. >You take it and drop the two artifacts in
  260. >It’s a lot easier to trot along and not have to worry about them
  261. “So what’s this Crystal Dusk like anyway?”
  262. >”I suppose you could ask him that yourself.”
  263. >He extends one of his scarlet hooves towards a dark gray colt that was currently bounding towards the two of you
  264. >His mane was a bit wavy, and held a muted hue of blue
  265. >”Hi Mr. Barnes!”
  266. >”Good afternoon Prince Dusk, shall I take your bag for you?”
  267. >”What? No, that’s fine, I’ve got it! Who’s this?”
  268. >The colt is a little taller than you, but judging by your appearance in the mirror, he’s around the same age
  269. >He walks around you curiously
  270. >”I’ve never seen her at school before.”
  271. “Because I just got here.”
  272. >”Oh wow, that’s neat. What’s your name?”
  273. “It’s Anon.”
  274. >This pony seems a bit overly enthusiastic
  275. >”That’s a nice name. It’s nice to meet you, Anon!”
  276. >He extends a hoof and smiles
  277. >You hesitantly meet it and give a little shake, doing your best to smile back
  278. >”So where are you from, Anon?”
  279. >”I’m uh, I’m from Earth.”
  280. >”Earth? Where’s that?”
  281. >Good point
  282. >Where WAS Earth in relation to this horseland?
  283. “Ah, it’s pretty far away.”
  284. >”Oh, so you moved here?”
  285. “Sort of, yeah. I um.. I think I’m gonna be living here for a while.”
  286. >”Oh that’s awesome! You’ll love it here! There’s so many cool things to do! Maybe you could even come over to the castle one day!”
  287. >”Prince Dusk, she’s currently occupying a room at the castle, per your mother’s request.”
  288. >You see the colt smiling brightly
  289. >”Oh wow, really? That’s even better!”
  290. >You begin on your trek back to the castle, which thankfully wasn't too far
  291.
  292. >You enter the crystal castle once more
  293. >”Where’s mom and dad, Barnes?”
  294. >”Most likely still having a discussion in the study.”
  295. >”Come on Anon! Let’s go!”
  296. >He grabs your hoof and starts to pull you along
  297. >Why do YOU have to go?!
  298. >You already met them!
  299. >You do start trotting alongside him, if only because being pulled along wasn’t comfortable
  300. >You follow him through the myriad of identical corridors
  301. >This place was bafflingly confusing
  302. >Seemingly for no reason other than to irk you
  303. >But he seems to know which way he’s going, because the two of you have ended back up in Sombra’s study
  304. >”Mom! Dad! I’m back from school!"
  305. >”Haha, there’s my boy!”
  306. >The colt jumps into his dad’s arms and gives him a hug
  307. >You come in with a less grandiose entrance, simply observing the scene in front of you
  308. >”Why didn’t you tell me that we were gonna be getting somepony new living in the castle?”
  309. >”Well because she only just arrived today, honey.”
  310. >Hope ushers you over
  311. >”Now Anon, me and Somby have been talking while you were out with Barnes.”
  312. >That doesn’t sound good
  313. >You always got nervous whenever anypon- anyONE used any variation of “we need to talk”
  314. “O-Oh?”
  315. >”Mhmm. And we thought that seeing as how you don’t seem to have a home anywhere here in the Crystal Empire, and we’ve not heard any words from anypony claiming to be your parents…”
  316. >Because they didn’t exist here
  317. >Sombra pipes in
  318. >”We’ve decided to adopt you ourselves, raise you like one of our own! Won’t that be grand?”
  319. >…Wat
  320. >It’s not really that far-fetched of a solution, but still
  321. >Being adopted by ponies?
  322. >Granted, you were kind of a pony right now
  323. >You wonder
  324. >How bad could it really be?
  325. >You try and be as enthusiastic as possible
  326. “Wow, really? That sounds great! Thank you so much!”
  327. >It was spooky how naturally that came to you
  328. >You suppose that
  329. >Well
  330. >It couldn’t be all that bad, right?
  331. >If anything, it was better than the Zone
  332.
  333. >And so you had become the new adopted daughter of the royal family
  334. >You got your own room and all
  335. >Right next to Dusk’s of course
  336. >You wouldn’t put it past them to manage to lose you in this place
  337. >But hey
  338. >This place was comfy as hell
  339. >It was better than sleeping sitting up at the top of a tower on the lookout for pseudogiants
  340. >You still don’t know how you managed to find one of those
  341. >Let alone make it angry enough to come after you
  342. >You lay in bed, holding up the softly glowing Moonlight artifact
  343. >The Wrenched lays on your chest
  344. >You knew how to take the precautions for this sort of thing
  345. >You know this thing could have fetched a pretty nice price back in the Zone
  346. >It could here as well, you assumed
  347. >But without these ponies knowing what else it gave them, they’d most likely only take it for a pretty bauble
  348. >Your mom and dad-
  349. >Er
  350. >Hope and Sombra were going to take you to get you enrolled in school tomorrow
  351. >You protested of course
  352. >You’d already been to school
  353. >But it was no use
  354. >With this tiny horse body, you’d effectively regressed in age
  355. >”All little fillies and colts have to go to school, Anon!” They said
  356. >You roll the Moonlight about in your hooves, watching as it casts an almost hypnotic glow across the crystal walls
  357. >It was like an art piece almost
  358. >You sat up and put them both on your nightstand
  359. >You’d already had to tell Dusk not to mess with them unless he was gonna take both
  360. >You pull your admittedly somewhat girly covers over you
  361. >Not that you would ever admit it, but you quite enjoy having a warm bed to sleep in, even if it IS a bit frilly
  362. >It’s a welcome change from sleeping in a crumbling, Snork-infested building
  363. >You even had a pillow
  364. >You sigh contentedly, closing your eyes
  365. >The more you stayed here, the more you realized that this place
  366. >Equestria
  367. >Wasn’t half-bad
  368. >Even if you were now a little filly
  369.
  370.
  371. >You close your eyes and snuggle into your pillow
  372. >Did you really wanna go back to the Zone?
  373. >No
  374. >No not really
  375. >Here you had a nice warm bed
  376. >A hot meal
  377. >And some strange, but loving parents by proxy
  378. >They’re a bit dorky
  379. >It doesn’t take you long to fall asleep
  380. >In fact this is the fastest you’re able to fall asleep in a while
  381. >As soon as your head hits the pillow, you’re out like a light
  382. .
  383. .
  384. .
  385. >”Anonnn…”
  386. >You grumble a bit and turn over, pulling your covers tighter around you
  387. >”Anon, wake up, we’ve got to go get you enrolled in school.”
  388. >You groan loudly as your blinds are opened and sunlight hits your face
  389. >You try and close your eyes even tighter than they already are
  390. >You feel yourself suddenly pulled out of bed by that weird energy again
  391. “AaaAAAH!”
  392. >”Anon, sweetie, when I say wake up, that means wake up.”
  393. “R-Right. Sorry Mom.”
  394. >You’re finding it a bit scary how naturally that kind of stuff is starting to come to you
  395. >”Now come along, the chefs have prepared a nice breakfast for you.”
  396. >She finally puts you down and you trot alongside her
  397. >Which is harder than it would seem, seeing as how she has longer strides than you do
  398. >She slows down a bit upon realizing this
  399. >”We’ve already sent Dusk along to school. Once you’re done eating I’ll take you to get enrolled.”
  400. >Hope taps her chin for a moment
  401. >”Though they won’t let you start on the same day. I’m sure we’ve got something for you to do here in the castle, or in the gymnasium.”
  402. “There’s a gymnasium here?”
  403. >”Mhm! The Equestrian Games were held there a couple times.”
  404. >The horse equivalent of the Olympics or something?
  405. >Strange
  406. >It makes you wonder what other equivalencies they’ve got here in Equestria
  407. >You step into the dining hall and are greeted by a stunning array of breakfast foods
  408. >You honestly don’t think you could eat it all
  409. >But damn it if you weren’t gonna try
  410. >You haven’t eaten this well in years
  411.
  412.
  413. >After breakfast, you find yourself trotting along the crystal streets, glancing at the passing ponies
  414. >Who are also made of crystal
  415. >Are you walking on dead crystal horses right now?
  416. >Is this some horrible, unspoken rule of the Crystal Empire that the dead are repurposed as the buildings and the pavement?
  417. >Your mind goes blank for a second as you try and remember what you were thinking about
  418. >To no avail
  419. >Surely it’ll come to you sometime later
  420. >You’re led towards the school, where apparently it’s recess at the moment
  421. >Shit
  422. >You remember recess
  423. >Granted, you were kind of the kind of kid that tried to get the teacher to let you stay inside and read
  424. >You fucking nerd
  425. >You’re hopeful at least that this might give you a chance to start over
  426. >Tomorrow
  427. >You head inside with your mom, where you sit in something almost akin to a waiting room while she fills out some paperwork
  428. >You’re out there for quite a while, simply trotting around
  429. >You occupy yourself for quite a while by simply staring at a picture of a pony that appeared to be staring back
  430. >You start to trot away, then look back at the painting of the mare
  431. “You talkin’ to me?”
  432. >It says nothing
  433. “You talkin’ to me?” You say with even more inflection
  434. >It remains silent
  435. “You talkin’ to me?”
  436. >You look around
  437. “Then who the hell else are you talkin’ to? You talkin’ to me? Well I’m the only one here.”
  438. >It continues to watch you
  439. “Who the fuck do you think you’re talking to?”
  440. “Oh yeah? Yeah? Okay…”
  441. >You whip out your detector from your saddlebag right as Hope trots out
  442. >You almost end up flinging it out of your hoof, and you fumble with it for a bit before tucking it neatly away
  443. >You feel your cheeks redden as your mother looks at you confusedly
  444. >”Well… Now that’s all taken care of, we should head back to the castle. I’ve got some things I need to take care of with Somby.”
  445. >What the hell were you supposed to do in the meantime then?
  446.
  447.
  448. >And so you’re back at the castle
  449. >You admit, it’s not a half bad place to be compared to the Zone
  450. >But it was at least a bit exciting there
  451. >You look at a nearby clock
  452. >It looks to be around the time kids get off from school
  453. >You step outside and the guard standing at attention outside of your door turns his head and looks down at you
  454. >”Ms. Anon. Is there something you need?”
  455. “I’m gonna go outside.”
  456. >”I am under orders from Lady Hope to escort you wherever you need to go.”
  457. >Great
  458. >You just wanted to go out and explore for a bit by yourself
  459. >But now you’ve got this armored gemstone following you around
  460. >You trot outside, the clinking of armor echoing your hoofsteps
  461. >Could be worse
  462. >You find yourself wandering about the town aimlessly
  463. >According to your bodyguard, the Crystal Empire is divided up into districts to make organization easier
  464. >You were currently in the market district if he was to be believed
  465. >The sound of a commotion drifts through the air, along with what appears to be the sounds of clanging metal
  466. >You start to follow it along, your curiosity getting the better of you
  467. >Last time this happened, you ended up in a land of talking horses
  468. >Surely they didn’t have emissions here though
  469. >Hopefully
  470. >This place was too beautiful for one of those terrible things to sweep through here
  471. >”It’s every day with you, always trying to shirk your responsibilities around the shop!”
  472. >”Ah! Ah! Hey don’t swing that thing around, you could take my head off with it!”
  473. >”Red, I keep telling you every day that you can go out to play when your chores and work are done.”
  474. >You hear a groan
  475. >”But Ironnnnn all the kids are long gone by the time I’m done!”
  476. >”Well that sounds like a personal problem to me. If you put half as much effort into finishing your chores as you did trying to avoid them, maybe you’d get them done quicker. Now get going, we’ve still gotta continue with your lessons for today as well.”
  477.
  478.
  479. >As you round a corner, you see the tail end of all the ruckus
  480. >There’s a mare holding a hammer with that strange energy from her horn, and a colt dejectedly trotting away towards a door to the shop
  481. >You look up at your bodyguard
  482. “What’s all that about?”
  483. >”That is the Crystal Empire’s resident blacksmith, Iron Kiss. A year or so ago she took an orphan colt in as her apprentice. Red Forge I believe his name is.”
  484. >A fitting name for a blacksmith’s apprentice at least
  485. >”Ms. Anon, do excuse me for a moment whilst I go speak with Iron Kiss. Do not wander too far.”
  486. >You roll your eyes as your escort makes his way over
  487. >One of your ears twitch as you hear a strange noise coming from out back behind the workshop.
  488. >Ever the curious filly, you follow the sound until you’re out behind the building
  489. >Just in time to see Red Forge trying to lower himself out the window
  490. >You blink a few times
  491. >As Red hits the ground, you speak up
  492. “Hi there!”
  493. >”Waagh!”
  494. >He jumps a bit and turns around too quickly
  495. >He ends up stumbling back into a trough of water
  496. >Though you want to help him, the sight is just too much, and you start snickering, then laughing
  497. >You sigh and trot over, helping him out of the water
  498. >His silvery coat is drenched, and his blue mane is matted and dripping wet
  499. “Eheh, sorry about startling you. I was just uh… Trying to introduce myself.”
  500. >Hope did say that you should try and make friends
  501. >”You sure got a strange way of doing so.”
  502. >You extend your hoof
  503. ”I’m Anon.”
  504. >He takes your hoof and shakes it
  505. >”Red Forge.”
  506. >The name doesn’t even match his colors
  507. >What gives
  508. “So you… Work here? Or something?”
  509. >As Red is about to answer you hear that voice from before
  510.
  511.
  512. >It’s Iron Kiss
  513. >”Red! What are you doing back here? Were you trying to sneak out?!”
  514. >He stammers, trying to come up with an excuse as the mare looms over the both of you
  515. >You watch her horn glow as she uses that energy to grab his ear and start tugging him along
  516. >”Alright young man, that’s it. YOU’RE going to take care of all of the orders today. You’d better get to forging if you want to be done by supper.”
  517. >”M-Mom stop! Stop! Not in front of my frieeeeaaaaghh!”
  518. >He flails as he’s tugged along
  519. >RIP
  520. >You hear the familiar sound of armor as your bodyguard trots over
  521. >”Are you okay, Miss Anon?”
  522. >Every single time someone calls you that you cringe a little bit on the inside
  523. >But this time, it’s less so
  524. >It feels somewhat natural
  525. “Of course.”
  526. >You watch the center crystal inlaid into the guard’s armor pulse a few times
  527. >”It appears that King Sombra is summoning us back. Come along Miss Anon, if it’s urgent we shouldn’t waste much time.”
  528. >The guard accompanies you back to the castle and the two of you end up back in Sombra’s study
  529. >”Ah you’re back Anon. Apologies for cutting your time in town short, but I believe I may need your help.”
  530. >Your help?
  531. “My help? Why?”
  532. >”Because of this.”
  533. >Sombra turns around and holds out a Fireball
  534. >The smoldering sphere rests gently in his hoof
  535. >Until you smack it out of it, sending it rolling to the ground over into a corner
  536. >”Anon! What in the world was that for?” Sombra stands, towering over you
  537. >He’s quite intimidating
  538. >You immediately drop your saddlebags on the ground and pull out the Wrenched, before shoving it against his chest
  539. “Hold this for a while and don’t touch the other thing.”
  540. >Your dad looks at it for a moment
  541. >”Why is that?”
  542. >You’re about to answer when you stop
  543. >Do these ponies even know what radiation is?
  544. >How would they? They don’t’ seem to even be at that technology level
  545.
  546.
  547. >How would you even explain the concept of radiation?
  548. “It’s just… These things can make you real sick if you stay around them too much.”
  549. >”And why is the one you gave me any different. Anon, what’s going on?”
  550. “Okay. So, these things, called artifacts, give off really bad energy that makes you sick, except some of them don’t, and can actually negate and remove that energy. Like the one you’re holding.”
  551. >Sombra seems to nod along with your explanation
  552. >”I see, so some sort of malicious magical energy is given off by them?”
  553. >Magic?
  554. >Is that what they’ve been doing with their horns every time?
  555. “Er, yes you could say that. These things are all over the place in the place I come from.”
  556. >”Why wouldn’t they be cleaned up or disposed of? It seems like quite the poor way to deal with these things if they’re dangerous to just leave them lying around.”
  557. >”No you see that’s the thing, they’re dangerous, but they’ve got upsides to them as well.”
  558. >Sombra raises an eyebrow
  559. “Like the one you found just recently, it’s called a Fireball. If you kept that on you somewhere, you’d probably be able to put your hoof on an oven without getting burnt. Don’t ask me how it works. Because I don’t know.”
  560. >”I see… So they all have different properties, I assume?”
  561. >You nod
  562. “Off the top of my head, I remember one known as Kolobok. Simply holding it is enough for it to heal wounds of any kind, but like most of these artifacts, they give off that harmful energy.”
  563. >”Since you seem to be the expert on these “artifacts” would you perhaps have any advice on how to handle them and storage for safekeeping? I’d hate for any of my subjects to come across these and become sick.”
  564. “Do you have anything made out of lead?”
  565.
  566.
  567. >”Lead? Whatever for?”
  568. “It’s a material that helps negate that harmful energy. If anything, storing the artifacts in something lead-based would make them safe for storage and transportation.”
  569. >”Verbose, but if you say so, I shall put an executive order in to our blacksmith at once. Until then.”
  570. >Sombra takes the Fireball with his magic, keeping the Wrenched close
  571. >”I’ll store this away somewhere safe until then. If more of these start appearing, I may need your assistance in the matter.”
  572. >You scrunch up your muzzle
  573. >More coming through?
  574. >How’s that possible unless other ponies are tossing in artifacts?
  575. >Other… Ponies?
  576. >Other ponies
  577. >OTHER PONIES
  578. >No matter how hard you try, you just can’t seem to think about that other word
  579. >What other word?
  580. >After a moment, the feeling washes away, and you can’t even remember why you were scared and confused in the first place
  581. >Strange
