BACKGROUND
　　　THE BEGINNING　✿　her name is hwang nahui and she is brought out to the world in the beginning of summer, under the hot summer sun of june 21st in a hospital somewhere in seoul, but in contrary to the warmth of the weather that welcomed her, hwang eunhye was hesitant about bringing the living piece of human that she held in her hands back to her apartment building. how nahui was formed still is a mystery to many, but the story starts nine month ago with a night of fun. it was a night of wanting to feel reckless and be dumb teens for once in their hectic lives, as sangcheol and eunhye did not even know each other, only that she was pretty and he was handsome and they were both drunk enough to not even see clearly out of their eyes and end up in the same bed. only months later did eunhye realize the sudden food craves and the feeling of wanting to throw up all the time wasn't just because she was overworked as an emergency physician, but because she was pregnant. she became horrified when she saw her pregnancy test turn to positive, but the nine months came quicker than she thought and sooner or later she gave birth to the unexpected hwang nahui. she wasn't really sure how to feel about this situation, seeing how this is the result of her own irresponsibility yet her heart did skip a beat. she also found the baby to be endearing and winsome, with her small chubby fingers and a light smile forming upon her lips ever so often. the cries would bring eunhye back to reality, but she decided to keep hwang nahui to raise her as her own child.
　　　EARLY CHILDHOOD　✿　eunhye was a work-oriented woman, so she didn't see the need to take a few days off of work each work to spend time with her daughter. instead nahui was dumped on her grandparent's doorsteps every morning and by the time work finishes, eunhye would return to pick her up although sometimes she'd get quite tired and just tell nahui to spend the night at her grandparent's house. nahui didn't mind this personally as her grandparents probably showered her with more affection and care than her mother will ever. she'd spend her days playing hide-and-seek with her cousins and friends from the neighbor and card games with grandpa, grinning childishly whenever she learns a new trick up her sleeve and winning the round (only to find out older that he purposely let her win just to see her smile). when she turned five, that was when nahui first met sangcheol. she thought of him as a delivery man, one that brought her lots of toys and pretty clothing. he ended up staying for the entire day at grandma's house, playing with nahui and telling her all these stories about himself and how much he's been waiting to see her. nahui doesn't remember much besides that, but she does recall the moment when eunhye returned home and the man giving a white envelope to her, telling her that there's around three million won that he's saved up over the past months that he's been meaning to give to the two. eunhye tried to throw the money back to him, but he kept in insisting and when he left, nahui witnessed the first time her mother ever cried.
　　　TEENAGE YEARS　✿　she's growing up, learning how to make friends and knowing what to say versus what not to say. she's learned that she can tell her friends about how her mother is a doctor and how much allowance she receives every two months, and she's learned not to tell her friends that the image of her father's face remains to be a fuzzy picture in her mind and how her mother won't even bother to take a few hours off her work to attend a parent-teacher conference. she's learned not to say anything much about her parents whenever questioned, and she rather focuses on school and other people. when it's time for nahui to enroll in a high school, her mother decides to send her daughter off to a boarding school as the idea actually came from a family friend who's also sending their son off to wanna high. eunhye thinks that this is an opportunity for nahui to not have to come home to an empty house anymore or rely on eating chinese take-out, waiting until ten p.m. every night for the house door to open and eunhye to return home. nahui thinks that this is a chance for her mother to finally throw her out of her house and not be bothered by a child anymore, but both of them never voices out their feelings and nahui only agrees hesitantly with a small nod. she finds herself with a luggage in one hand and a map of the girl's dormitory in the other, wondering if her mother will miss her presence around the house. that's when she decided that she was going to be a daughter that her mother will be proud of.
　　　PRESENT DAY　✿　she becomes more sociable and friendly in life, a hoard of people always there to follow her around and laugh at her lame jokes even if they're not funny. teachers love nahui too for her excellence and smart brain, and they know her for being a talented young lady who's the star member of the school's archery team. for once, she's the center of attention. yet there is some dissatisfaction. none of these people are hwang eunhye. she's striving hard to get good grades and earn herself a remarkable resume, and even at tough times, she tells herself that she's doing this all because her future and dreams of becoming a premed student at snu, but all nahui ever wanted was for her mother to tell her that she never regretted the decision of keeping her and that she is absolutely proud of everything that nahui has achieved. within wanna high, the name hwang nahui isn't really a surprise to anyone. she's the classmate to ask to borrow a pencil without expecting to return it back or copy homework off of the five minutes during class change, even if they might not be particularly close with her. she does have a decent amount of close friends that she can rely on for support and help, staying up until two in the morning talking about their future plans for life and sharing any new gossip that's been circulating around the school. she's still cautious on discussing her personal background with anyone, but she realizes that many people in the school are also suffering with problems of their own, which is why she strives to be an easygoing and simple girl who holds a happy smile on her face that's constantly reminding herself to be mindful of others.

HABITS
　　　MORNING ROUTINE　✿　she usually wakes up forty minutes before school starts to get ready for the day. her routine consists of the usual (brushing her teeth, getting dressed in her uniform, etc.) as well as tying her hair up in a ponytail and drinking a cup of cold milk every morning to get energized. she doesn't usually put on much makeup and rather invests her time on taking care of her skin.
　　　SLEEPING　✿　nahui usually ends up going to sleep anywhere from twelve to two, and if one of her roommate is still up, she'd sleep with an eye mask on. it's been noted that she sleeps like a log and it takes a lot for something to wake her up, and she likes having something to hug while she's sleeping so on her bed sits a rilakkuma plush.

HOBBIES
　　　ARCHERY　✿　if she were to confess, nahui only considered on joining the school's archery team for a sport to add in her college application (of course she'd never have the heart to tell sungwoon this), but after several meetings, she actually enjoyed it. she isn't the best player on the team but after months of training and practice and becoming dedicated, she grasped a good aim that can earn her some pretty decent scores in competitions.
　　　PIANO　✿　she started to learn piano at the age of seven and continued playing it ever since. after moving to wanna high and coming to the realization that she cannot carry her precious piano to her dorm, she joined the music club so that she can find an excuse to play the piano whenever she feels like she's missing home. she's often found humming to canon or fur elise.

HATES
　　　FAILURE　✿　maybe it's the fear of letting someone know or letting other people know that hwang nahui isn't as capable as she might seem, she can't bring herself to accepting failures. part of the reason is because of her pride, and another part is because her mother. nahui can never seem to fully satisfy her, someone who is always seeking for the best out of her daughter and won't accept defeat herself.
　　　GERMS　✿　unless if it's her time of the month, she can't even find herself using a public restroom knowing how unsanitary it is. while nahui isn't a complete neat freak, she dislikes messy and unclean places and would even clean up after someone else's mess if she has too. even after she eats something with her fingers, she'd have to wash her hands or put on some hand sanitizer.
　　　LONELINESS　✿　despite the fact that her mother never paid much attention to her, nahui was never really alone. she had her grandparents, the kids from her neighborhood, her friends and cousins- she was always surrounded by people and never had much trouble finding anyone new to talk to either. this made her develop an uneasy feeling whenever she's alone.

　　　GRANDPARENTS　✿　nahui loves her grandparents to the moon and back, and she would always take great pride in herself whenever her grandparents say that she's their favorite grandchild. although she does not have much time to spend with them nowadays, she writes them letters every now and then and calls them at least once a week to check up on them and ask how everything is going.
　　　PICTURES　✿　whether it's taking a picture of herself with her friends or of the scenery or food, about a fifth of her phone's storage is used for storing pictures in her camera album. the reason why she likes pictures so much is because she can preserve the moment on screen so that one day when she's older, she can look back to see all the happy memories flooding back to her.
　　　SWEATSHIRTS　✿　when it comes to style, she prefers to look good over anything else, but sadly she has zero fashion sense so she tends to dress simple. her closet is lined up with mostly plain tees and sweatshirts that's always a bit loose for her, and she'd usually wear a sweatshirt over her uniform if the school gets too cold that makes her appear comfortable and snuggly.

FIRST MEETING ―
　　　✿　nahui has definitely heard the name before- bae jinyoung. to be clear, she doesn't dislike him; she just doesn't have a good opinion of him. she admits, she finds him good looking along with the rest of the grade, but it's the way that he carries himself that makes nahui slightly irritated. maybe it's how he looks down on people and acts to pretentious all the way (as she would say, why does he look like he always has a stick up his ass?), or maybe it's how he regretted her handshake back in freshman year when she attempted to start a conversation with everyone in her math class and practically regretted her in front of her peers. either way, she's vowed to steer right of him and the clique of his equally pretentious ten friends. well, there was the exception of sungwoon who she actually became quite close to over the years from being in the same archery team, so when their sports team booked the lecture hall in the library for the informational meeting about the team, she didn't expect to see jinyoung also there along with rest of his chess team.
　　　✿　there was a conflict between the scheduling as the chess team always went to the library for meetings while the librarian failed to inform them that the archery team will be borrowing the room for half an hour. a member of the chess team actually suggested that they leave because he did not want to upset the hwang nahui, one of the most popular girls in grade twelve, and jinyoung hadn't been planning to make a scene until the junior in his club spoke up. he instead became persistent that they stay since after all, the archery team failed to properly inform him, the captain of the chess team, that they planned on taking the library from them, so he has the right to use the space. on the other hand, nahui had been in charge of the archery team that day for their captain could not make it to the meeting (plus, it was one of the informational meeting held at the beginning of the year so it wasn't necessarily important for a veteran to attend). she wasn't having the best day, having received a 76 on her biology test, and personally, she didn't think what they did was wrong. she also thought that the whole idea of the school wasting time on a team for chess is idiotic, and of course in the heat of the moment and as an attempt to find an outlet for her stress, she let this slip out of her mouth and said some other things that might have sounded insulting towards jinyoung. in her defense, she smiled the whole way through.

RELATIONSHIP TIMELINE ―
　　　BEGINNING　✿　it's been weeks since their little exchange happened with each other, and she actually would have forgot about it if it weren't for sungwoon's constant laughter and reminding her about the incident whenever he has the chance to. she had thought he forgotten about it for sure, so when jinyoung approached her one afternoon during the library, she was taken aback. he was half-expecting for him to either mock her or get back at her for embarrassing him in front of his team and half-expecting for him to just ignore him presence and hope that he was acting walking over to talk to someone else, but he placed his belongings next to her and handed her a drink. nahui had to look to the left and right and behind her to make sure that he was actually talking to her, causing for jinyoung to resist the urge to roll his eyes. she quickly thanked him, still a bit curious about his attempt to start up a conversation. he was sarcastic and appeared unapproachable as ever, but here he was, sitting down next to her and after offering her a drink, he continued to stay and started doing his homework. he doesn't talk for the rest of the time, and nahui is debating whether or not she should invite him to have dinner with her. they're not friends right? why should she even have to think about this? she mustered up all the courage she had and asked him if he wanted to grab a bite with her, a light reddish hue on her cheeks when she admires how nice his features are. jinyoung, not wanting to push the relationship to fast, gives a simple decline. nahui nodded before gathering her stuff and walking out, feeling a bit empty inside. after all, it's her second time being denied by bae jinyoung. she doesn't return to the library that night.
　　　✿　their relationship continued on like this, a series of jinyoung's lame attempts to start up a conversation between the two. everything about his actions is making nahui's head spin, not exactly in the way you feel when you fall in love with someone but just in a way that makes nahui question every single one of his unusual actions for someone who holds the reputation of being one of wanna high's most unapproachable students. she comes more wary by habit when she's around him, her body tensing up whenever he voices out a "miss hwang!" from behind. her mind has many made-up theories to explain the reason behind his actions- maybe he likes nahui as a person and wants to get to know her better. or maybe he's doing this because of a game that's been played by him and his ten friends (realizing that this could be a possibility after sharing his strange behavior to her friends and them responding that they also have encountered something similar), but even if it was a dare, nahui doesn't think she'll mind. she's rather curious, finding this whole situation to be entertaining and somewhat ridiculous that she's trying to know a guy that she's never seen even smiling around her. since it's her senior year after all, why not have a little bit of fun? her reason and conscience tells her to instead focus on her studies mainly and not to delve too deep in this situation, but the further she tries to talk herself out of it, the more she digs herself in.
　　　✿　jinyoung feels foreign to this as well. he's not used to the attention he gets whenever he calls out her name and heads turn to their direction, a surprised expression written over their faces to see him voluntarily interacting with someone other than his little clique. he still keeps on the same face when talking to nahui, and his replies are always kept short and straightforward. she calls him a tsundere once or twice, and he retorts by calling her loud. he doesn't like her, but he finds her an amusing person. like that joke she told about bacteria during one of their biology labs together, he didn't think it was funny, but her laughter rang in his ears for the rest of the class period. he admits, he sort of thought it was kinda cute, and she was kinda cute too. nahui found out after working together that jinyoung was practically a genius when it came to biology, so she asked him to tutor her. he agreed, thinking that it'll only bring them closer together, and closer to his goal as well.
　　　MIDDLE　✿　the two meet every afternoon in the library, sometimes for tutoring and sometimes just because they wanted each other's presence. they work side by side, jinyoung teaching nahui the different protein structures and each of their functions and fighting the urge to roll his eyes and give a sarcastic remark when she gives a little whine and forgets all of what she's learned within a span of seconds. their conversations aren't always about biology; sometimes nahui asks jinyoung what he wants to be when he graduates and where does he want to go for college. he says he doesn't know, but all he wants is a job that can bring him lots and lots of money. she tells him that she wants to be a physician, more specifically an anesthesiologist. for the first time in her high school career, she mentions her mother. she tells jinyoung that she wants to become a well-respected physician so that she can make her mother proud, and he doesn't admit this, but for a split second, he finds himself admiring her. he admires her ambition and the self-confident aura she emits. he wants to tell nahui that he believes her mother will be proud of her, but he struggles to open his mouth. then again, he doesn't even consider them to be friends, so why bother?
　　　✿　they would also go to dinner together (nahui jokingly saying to jinyoung that he finally accepted her invitation after all these years), and if neither of them wants to go back to studying, the two would walk around the streets of seoul. there's a certain distance that rests in between them, but both of them don't seem to mind it and continue on chatting about random things in life. he sometimes would light up a cigarette, much to nahui's dismay. she never understood why jinyoung would resort to smoking at such a young age, but she learned to never question it unless if he willingly spoke to her about it. when they return back to the library, they always sit in the table that's near the corner, farthest away from the librarian so that they'd get away with sharing a snack under the table. jinyoung and nahui agreed to study together ever since he became her tutor, and they also made a pact to help out each other achieve their dreams in life. it's cheesy, but nahui made jinyoung accept it with completely sincerity and commitment.
　　　✿　it's rarer to find a day where they aren't together, and despite this, their relationship is still strange as ever. nahui introduces jinyoung as simply jinyoung, not as a friend or a lover. she does feel like she knows everything about him, from his favorite drink to order at the cafe they go to after dinner to how many chess tournaments he's gone to so far this year, but she also doesn't. she doesn't know anything about his background nor anything about what his genuine smile looks like, and maybe he's just an extremely unreadable person but nahui second doubts herself all the time and questions whether or not they're even friends. she's not acting like her usual self, the one who could go up to even a teacher and continue on a conversation with no trouble. when it comes to jinyoung, she has to stop on her tracks and think every once in a while. as much as she hates labels in a relationship, she wants some sort of indicator to let her know that they're not stranger who only study together but a pair of friends who's learned to grow comfortable around each other and can trust with their secrets.
　　　END　✿　nahui becomes prettier in his eyes, and he wants to hit himself for not noticing it earlier. he gets a bit flustered when she once declared her love for him when he agreed to buy her bread and milk tea from the cafe nearby after not having the time to eat breakfast. he starts blushing whenever she stares at him with big adoring eyes that makes him dizzy and look away. at times like these it makes him wonder if he might just actually develop feelings for her. he's skeptical yet nervous to know, but he knows that he stays up later than usual to answer her facetime calls and watch her fall asleep through the video, takes care of her and nag about her bad habits, and turns into a total mess sometimes and stutters and blushes when she's around. he still calls her miss hwang, but it's more affectionate now that the reason why he refers to her by this nickname is because no one else does. the first time he admits his feelings for her (to himself, of course) is when she takes his hand and drags him back to the school's music room to hear her play the piano. they're sitting side by side and he watches her adoringly and thinks about how talented she is. nahui tells him that she misses home but somehow playing the piano gives her a sense of comfort. he then knows that she considers him someone special, and he wants to treasure that. he thinks, just confess. he wants to, but what's holding him back? is it the guilt from the dare of making her fall in love with him? how he approached her with a reason in mind but didn't actually expect to get so attached? or is it the fear of rejection? what if she didn't like him back? what if she found out about the dare and couldn't look at him the same way anymore? and most importantly, is he even sure of his own feelings? after all, he never saw anyone as much more than a friend.

　　　✿　i've mentioned this above but to elaborate: the two walking around the streets after dinner and it's winter of there's little puffs of air coming out of their mouths as they talk and nahui ends up leaning in to jinyoung because she insists that she'll be warmer and while he appears annoyed at her actions,  he doesn't mind it actually.
　　　✿　nahui is extra emotional on a day due to that she just failed her biology test, and not to mention she's on her time of the month. she decides to skip the rest of the day and heads towards the rooftop to get some fresh air, and an angry jinyoung finds her there wondering why the fuck did she decide to skip class and ignore all his calls. she ends up confessing all her worries to him, and while she's making self-depreciating comments of how dumb she is, wanting to be a doctor and all but not even being good at the subject she's going to major in, he comes forward with his problems too and tells her that everyone suffers with problems of their own.

　　　✿　nahui tries hard in school. she doesn't find it to be a pain, but rather something that she'll have to pull through. she struggles a little with paying attention in class, sometimes shielding her eyes from the teacher and dozing off in a class where she can just self-study like history or biology. if she knows that the teacher won't end up yelling at her, nahui can often be found with her head on her desk and attempting to sleep through the teacher's lessons, or she might be doodling on the margins of her notes as an attempt to keep herself awake. she then usually borrows one of her friend's notes to copy off from or read the textbook to study for a test. besides that, she considers herself a decent student, one that completes her homework on time without having to rely on others and studies for tests. the only time when she would raise her hand to answer a question is when no one else in the room can answer it, so besides that, she doesn't really participate in class discussions. her grades are, for most of the time, above average.
　　　✿　she currently resides in the school dorms, waking up at six to get ready for the day. once school ends at around four, she stays behind if she has a club meeting or head towards the school library to complete her homework and do some self-studying until it is time for dinner. she then heads back to the library, with her notes and textbooks sprawled out over the table and earbuds plugged in. she'd leave about half an hour before the building closes. her night life doesn't end here as she returns back to her dorm to study some more, staying up to usually about one or if she's busy, two. she occasionally gives her grandparents a call if she's feeling stressed or sneak into the music room to play the piano, and in her senior year, she plans on solely focusing on the csat and creating some unforgettable memories with her friends.
