a)	He was shivering, his face was white, and he walked slowly as though it ached to move.
“What’s the matter, Schatz?”
“You go to bed,” I said, “you’re sick.”
I read aloud from Howard Pyle’s Book of Pirates but I could see he was not following when I started reading.
It was a bright, cold day, the ground covered with a sleet that had frozen so that it seemed as if all the bare trees, the bushes, the cut brush and all the grass and the bare ground had been varnished with ice.
After a while he said to me, “You don’t have to stay in here with me, papa, if it bothers you.”
“About what time do you think I’m going to die?” he asked.

b)	Holly is an intelligent girl. She works diligently on her homework and constantly gets exceptional grades. She is amazingly bright, her teachers all agree. Holly is grateful that her school performance is above average. She has an unusual talent for math, but she is extremely careful not to brag about her easy grasp of numbers. Other in her class look at her enviously as speak sarcastically about her even though she is generous with her time and helps her classmates. This often makes her unhappy and she has more than once cried unhappily into her pillow. People can be so cruel, she complained bitterly to her best friend. “You are my only friend,” she said gratefully to the girl sitting quietly beside her. Her friend hugged her warmly and said in a chocking voice. I’ll always be your faithful friend, and stand by you faithfully.
