  1. >"Where is he?"
  2. >"Did you see which way he went?"
  3. >"He's over there, get him!"
  4. >Wanted by the royal guard, as usual.
  5. >You notice the while stallions clad in gold armor approaching behind you.
  6. >You didn't feel like getting caught today.
  7. >Dashing into the fields behind the castle, your legs carry you faster than you thought they could go.
  8. >But you couldn't run forever.
  9. >To your left, salvation.
  10. >You run through a large gate of bush and shrubbery, and enter the Labyrinth.
  11. >"He went into the Labyrinth again!"
  12. >"He always escapes into that wretched place."
  13. >One of the guards sighs.
  14. >"You two wait outside for him to leave."
  15. >After instructing his fellow guards, he runs into the Labyrinth after you.
  16. >But he won't find you.
  17. >He never does.
  18.
  19. >Being a child at the royal palace is a pain, sometimes.
  20. >You're well aware your upbringing is more lucrative, priveliged, and probably envied by most p0nies.
  21. >You're not a fan, however.
  22. >Being 11 now, you were only 7 when taken in by the Princesses.
  23. >You have no clue how you managed to end up in this place, but after a year, crying for your mommy stopped being useful.
  24. >Now you just like to spend your time alone.
  25. >The Princesses liked to keep you close, being an 'endangered species', whatever that means.
  26. >Them setting up playdates with their students and relatives.
  27. >You always felt so out of place, though.
  28. >You used to constantly wonder why they never brought other humans.
  29. >Then they told you why.
  30. >The want to be alone only increased.
  31. >They royal guard always tried keeping an eye on you.
  32. >It gets old, fast.
  33. >So you begin your daily routine, escaping the guards line of sight, dashing to the Labyrinth.
  34. >The other p0nies hate this structure, but you love it.
  35. >You've memorized it's twists and turns, as you come here every time you want to be alone.
  36. >Which is quite often.
  37.
  38. >However, you wouldn't get to be alone today.
  39. >But you don't know that yet.
  40. >As you make your way into the Labyrinth, you recount the twists and turns necessary to reach your favorite point.
  41. >Left, right, right, left, straight, left...
  42. >It was clockwork by this point.
  43. >One last turn, and your destination was reached.
  44. >The center of the Labyrinth, occupied by a brilliant stone statue of the Princesses.
  45. >Well, others thought it was brilliant.
  46. >You liked it because of the stone bench where you could relax.
  47. >You take your seat, staring at the statue.
  48. >Luna and Celestia.
  49. >They wanted you to call them your 'Mom's.
  50. >You know who your mom is.
  51. >She's not them.
  52. >You still miss her...
  53. >But you quickly toss that fleeting emotion aside.
  54. >You know there's no way to send you back.
  55. >You asked every day for the first year of your life here.
  56. >Surely they would have tried to get rid of you by that point.
  57. >And since you're still here, they failed.
  58.
  59. >You reach into your jacket pocket and pull out a shiny apple.
  60. >Taking a bite, you relax on the stone bench.
  61. >No matter where you are, apples taste awesome.
  62. >You lie back on the stone slab, hand behind your head.
  63. >Eyes closed, you relax.
  64. >Another day of solitude.
  65. >*crunch*
  66. >Another bite of your apple is gone.
  67. >However this time, it wasn't you biting it.
  68. >You peek open your eyes to see a pair of dark green ones staring down at you.
  69. >"Hi!"
  70. >Unperturbed, you sit up.
  71. >So much for being alone.
  72. >The pair of green eyes takes a seat next to you on the bench.
  73. >Well, as much of 'taking a seat' is when lying down on the bench aside you.
  74. >"I'm still hungry..."
  75. >It whines.
  76. >She's always like this.
  77. >Reaching into your jacket pocket, you bring out a second apple.
  78. >You learned to bring extras after she kept eating yours.
  79. >You playfully stick it on her horn.
  80. >"..."
  81. "..."
  82. >"...meanie."
  83. >She conjures some green magic, her horn disappearing momentarily, the apple falling into her hooves.
  84. >The horn reappears, and she happily starts eating.
  85.
  86. >This apple-eating nuisance is no other than a changeling, Chrysalis.
  87. >Well, THE changeling, to you.
  88. >She tells you there are others, but they are disguised at other p0nies.
  89. >That makes you truly paranoid.
  90. >Well, it would, if the changeling in front of you could actually change into other p0nies.
  91. >She doesn't seem to be good at changing yet.
  92. >This one, at least, happens to be your friend.
  93. >She's been your friend for a few years now.
  94. >One of your only friends at that.
  95. >Well, there's Cadenza and Shining...
  96. >But they're just there because the Princess tells them to be.
  97. >Makes you feel REALLY wanted.
  98. >Back to the black thing full of holes.
  99. >"Running from the guards again, are we?"
  100. >You nod.
  101. >She knows you come here when being chased.
  102. >Off in the distance, a cry is heard.
  103. >"Anon! Come out wherever you are..."
  104. >The guard is still looking for you.
  105. >Chrissy laughs.
  106. >"Allow me."
  107.
  108. >A flash of green overtakes her throat for a second.
  109. >She then yells in the direction of the guard.
  110. >"I found the boy!"
  111. >She sounds remarkably like a fully grown male guard.
  112. >Impressions were always her strong point.
  113. >"Y...you have?"
  114. >"Yes! I'll be bringing him to the castle immediately."
  115. >She jabs a holed hoof into your side.
  116. >Oh, right, this is a two man act.
  117. "Yeah, I'm coming back!"
  118. >The guard remains silent for a moment.
  119. >"...very well."
  120. >You hear hoofsteps as the guard gets farther and father away...
  121. >Then closer for a moment.
  122. >Then farther again.
  123. >It IS a Labyrinth.
  124. >Once he's out of earshot, Chrissy explodes into a bout of laughter.
  125. >She still sounds like the guard though, so it's mildly disturbing.
  126. >Realizing she forgot to change back, she bashfully covers her mouth with her hooves.
  127. >After a brief awkward silence, you two both laugh.
  128. >Which is good, the mouth covering bit was futile anyways.
  129. >You can always look through her hooves.
  130.
  131. >The hours pass, you spend your time talking, as usual.
  132. >Nothing in particual, just life in the castle, being an outcast.
  133. >She can relate to the second one, at least.
  134. >The sun starts setting, the Princess' doing of course.
  135. >It's also a sign you really should be getting back.
  136. "I gotta get going."
  137. >You get up from the oddly comfortable stone slab.
  138. >"Oh come on, so soon?"
  139. >You look down to Chrissy, who is still on the bench.
  140. "I've been here for a few hours, isn't that enough? Besides, the Princess is gonna be mad if I'm not back soon."
  141. >"Well I'm a Princess too, and I say you have to stay!"
  142. >You chuckle.
  143. >She did say she was the Princess of the Changelings.
  144. >Though, with not seeing any other changelings around, you're hesitant to believe her.
  145. "Okay, 'Princess', but I'm pretty sure that the sun holds a bit more sway than walking cheese."
  146. >That struck a chord.
  147. >"HEY!"
  148. >You zip up your jacket, and start walking away.
  149. "See ya later, Chrissy."
  150. >"Yeah, see ya..."
  151. >Goodbyes are never pleasant with this one.
  152. >You make your way out of the Labyrinth.
  153. >Right, straight, right, left, right, right, left...
  154. >And the gardens appear in front of you.
  155. >Like clockwork.
  156.
  157. >You make your way into the castle, past the steps into the throne room, which is empty.
  158. >Past the hallways that lead to the library.
  159. >Up the stairs, past the balconies.
  160. >And into your room.
  161. >And, as expected, a certain Princess of the Sun was waiting for you.
  162. >"Anon, you're back."
  163. >You trudge into the room, dropping your jacket on the floor.
  164. >Without even glancing at the large white mare in your room, you plop down on your bed.
  165. "Goodnight."
  166. >You hear an audible sigh.
  167. >"I worry about you...I know you were in the gardens."
  168. "Then why didn't you come get me?"
  169. >Silence.
  170. >"I want you to come back on your own, you know."
  171. "Well I didn't."
  172. >You were being a brat, you know it.
  173. >But you never cared for the Princess' nagging you.
  174. >Finally, she gives up.
  175. >She walks towards the door.
  176. >"Anon, you shouldn't spend all your time alone."
  177. >You don't respond.
  178. >You aren't always alone.
  179. >"You're spending the day with Cadenza tomorrow."
  180. >No response.
  181. >Another playdate with the younger Princess.
  182. >Whoopee.
  183. >"Goodnight, Anon."
  184. "Night."
  185. >She closes the door, leaving you to solitude once more.
  186.
  187. >You hated being alone.
  188. >You hated being TOLD you're alone.
  189. >You hated being forced to play with others as if it would ease your loneliness.
  190. >But it doesn't, and you hate it.
  191. >The only thing keeping you moderately happy would be apples.
  192. >Apples, and the odd thing you share those apples with.
  193. >At that exact moment, a young changeling falls asleep with her clutch.
  194. >She hated being an outcast.
  195. >She hated being TOLD she was an outcast.
  196. >She hated being forced to deal with others because she was special.
  197. >But they don't get her, and she hated it.
  198. >The only thing keeping her moderately content were apples.
  199. >Apples, and the odd thing that gave them to her.
