  3. ---
  4. The school will be closed November 26 and 27 for Thanksgiving.
  5. The school will be open on December 24, 2015, and then it will be open again on January 4, 2016.
  6. ---
  7. Homework: think of some possible solutions to these and other problems that an underwater city would have. (They can be realistic engineering solutions, or something more creative like there will be mermaids that also live in your city.)
  8. ---
  9. Air: everyone must have an oxygen mask, tube to the surface for air exchange, plant trees and plants to produce oxygen
  10. Food: eat fish, eat the crops that you planted for oxygen, raise animals in the city
  11. Transportation: swimming, tubes connecting the places you need to go, little submarines like cars
  12. Garbage and Waste: ship non-recyclable garbage to landfills, separate out recyclable waste and recycle it, some of it can be composted and used as fertilizer for the plants
  13. Light and Heat: artificial lighting for the plants
  14. Energy: chemicals in the water, ocean surface solar panels, wave and tidal energy
  15. ---
  16. In your group, design an underwater city. Decide what features and facilities it will have, think of solutions to at least a couple of the problems we’ve discussed, and draw a map of the city. (You also need to decide where your city will be and you should think of a name for it.)
  17. Explain your idea to the other group and answer any questions.
  18. ---
  19. BREAK
  20. ---
  21. conlang = constructed language = a language that is invented (rather than naturally spoken), especially for fictional worlds (such as several languages in Lord of the Rings, the Klingon language in Star Trek, and the Dothraki language in the Game of Thrones television show)
  22. ---
  23. p. 41
  24. blog = web + log = a website where people post personal stories and pictures and commentary
  25. “The calm before the storm” = the quiet time before a big (usually negative) thing happens
  26. part 2 - discuss and answer the questions
  27. 1 It’s about what their family did last weekend.
  28. 2 Clothes and equipment for the beach. (towels, sunscreen, food, sunglasses, bathing suits, etc.)
  29. 3 Ellie, Louis, and Oscar are probably James’s children. (They’re definitely “the kids” from the first sentence.)
  30. ---
  31. part 3 - what words does James use in these sentences?
  32. a rushed down
  33. b came out
  34. e jumped
  35. f grabbed
  36. g headed down
  37. part 4b - what words does the author use instead of these?
  38. raining - pouring (= heavy rain)
  39. arrived - got there
  40. full of people - packed (= so many people that everyone was very close together)
  41. looking - staring (= looking very intently with a lot of focus) (stare, not star)
  42. holding - clutching (= holding tightly)
  43. part 4c - what word from the box can complete these sentences?
  44. 1 raced (= ran quickly)
  45. 2 exhausted (= very tired)
  46. 3 boiling (= very hot, not really 100C boiling)
  47. 4 scrambled (= to climb with hands and feet, like up a beach or riverbank that’s too steep to walk)
  48. 5 wandered (= to walk around with no specific destination or hurry)
  49. 6 collapsed (= fall down, especially with exhaustion or stress or sadness)
  50. ---
  51. These words give more information about the manner and purpose of something. They make writing more interesting than if you just say “ran”, “tired”, “hot”, etc.
  52. ---
  53. “Last one there is a rotten egg.” - something children say to make anything into a race (you don’t want to be a rotten egg, so you try not to be the last one to arrive)
  54. ---
  55. Homework: Imagine you live in the city you designed. Write a blog post about what you did on the weekend in that city. (Try to use interesting descriptive language like in the book.)
