- - Most suffixes change the part of speech of the word (especially nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs)
- ---
- Many adverbs are formed with [adjective]+ly
- Some for direction are formed with [adjective]+ward or [noun]+ward, such as “homeward”
- ---
- In your group, try to think of examples of suffixes that change words between nouns, verbs, and adjectives
- noun -> verb: [no change: drive], strengthen, personify
- noun -> adjective: (resonance -> resonant), beautiful, valueless, sentimental, sunny
- verb -> noun: teacher, actor, settlement, certificate, education, resident, assistant,
- verb -> adjective: tired, tiring, valuable, specific, active
- adjective -> noun: activity, specification, [no change: individual]
- adjective -> verb: globalize, lessen, simplify
- ---
- Another common set of verb and noun/adjective pairs that change pronunciation are the -ate words:
- graduate, duplicate, estimate, advocate, moderate
- ---
- Some suffixes change the stress of the root word:
- pronounce -> pronunciation, educate -> education
- specify -> specific
- specific -> specificity
- photograph -> photography (and photographer)
- ---
- Others don’t:
- settle -> settlement, allot -> allotment
- begin -> beginner, open -> opener
- ---
