- As he paused uncertainly, there was a man’s high, wordless yell, followed by a mounting crescendo of thumps in the shaft. A pistol came plunging down the shaft, then a man’s body, which landed with a bone-splintering crash at the foot of the ladder. A bullet hole where the bridge of his nose had been indicated that he had been dead before the final plunge.
- Up above, there were no more sounds of gunfire. The hunter squinted at the dead man’s face and muttered instinctively, “Peanuts Posey—five hundred.” He stepped over the body and stood at the foot of the ladder, looking up at the circle of blue sky that marked the mouth of the shaft.
