- I think the answer is D because when the author was reporting the results of the experiment, she included Theis’s theory: “the bees were repelled not by the fragrance itself, but by the abundance of beetles.” This theory refers to the bees however, previously, the author mentioned “Bees...did not prefer the highly scented flowers. Squash bees were indifferent.” Therefore, I can infer that although Theis’s theory referred to bees, it could be applied to squash bees as well.

Although we later find out it was the opposite, the question asks for what seemed “initially plausible.”
