  19. Question 24:
  20. Person 1:
  21. I chose A because …
  22.
  23. Person 2
  24. I think the answer is D because when the author was reporting the results of the experiment, she included Theis’s theory: “the bees were repelled not by the fragrance itself, but by the abundance of beetles.” This theory refers to the bees however, previously, the author mentioned “Bees...did not prefer the highly scented flowers. Squash bees were indifferent.” Therefore, I can infer that although Theis’s theory referred to bees, it could be applied to squash bees as well.

  43. I picked A since they used Texas gourd plants throughout the entire experiment. I’m not sure if it’s D but beetles and the bees do both go to the plants due to its aroma.

  65. Question 25:
  66. Person 1:
  67. I chose A because …
  68.
  69. Person 2
  70. I think the answer is C. In the beginning of the article, the author mentions that the scientists experiment with fragrance levels in the flowers to find out what affected the attraction of pollinators. She mentioned that the scientists believed that increasing the floral scent would repel the striped cucumber beetles and attract the pollinators. Although we later find out it was the opposite, the question asks for what seemed “initially plausible.”
  71.
  72. Person 3
  73. I chose C because the text stated “”she and Adler made half the plants more flagrant by tucking di….treated swabs deep inside their flowers.” The scientists increased the fragrance of the flowers, but only with one compound,

  88. I picked C because they are asking which choice is their initial thought of the experiment and Theis/Adler of increasing the floral scent on the flower.
  89. Person 9
  90. I picked C since it states that “Intuition suggests that more of that aroma should be even more appealing to bees, which relates to the increase in floral scent.

  108. Question 27:
  109. Person 1:
  110. I chose C because the scientists separated flowers into hand pollinated and natural groups “to see whether the fragrance activities of bees and beetles resulted in reduced pollination”meaning its purpose was to see if the bees avoided the compound or the beetles.
  111.
  112. Person 2
  113. I think the answer is C. Hand-pollinated flowers produce more seeds than naturally pollinated flowers which means that it is only logical that the pollinators would be attracted to the hand-pollinated flowers. However, they weren’t, and the only thing that could possibly cause this is the presence of the striped cucumber beetles. This reasons with Theis’s statement.

  132. Person 9
