Then, just a few yards away, a bell rang so loudly that they both turned.

It was the bell from the strongman game. For a quarter, you walloped a little metal scale with a huge mallet. You tried to make the metal ball shoot all the way up and hit the bell. If you rang the bell, you won a stuffed animal. That's why Vince Fantana was so surprised to hear that bell ring so loud and clear. You had to be incredibly strong to ring the bell. Almost all the customers who played the game just lost their quarter.

The man, who had rung the bell, had his back to them. He hefted the huge mallet once more, raising the wooden hammer high overhead, then he turned and swung.

   Chapter 22

The blow from the mallet caught Vince Fantana flush in the head. There was a sickening, squishy thud like the sound Maxi heard the time she dropped pumpkins off the highway overpass onto unsuspecting motorists. The squat man crumpled soundlessly.
