Reasoning: After a harrowing battle against the mother of Xenomorphs, Kaguya herself, Salt is horribly wounded in the after-math. They manage to force Kaguya to retreat through sheer numbers, but many fall in the  SECOND war that had come down upon Oasis. The Kaguya group had come with the intention of capturing two individuals, and they manage to succeed when Rym takes on Salt and three others, in order to fight for Chamo back. The group's weakness, or perhaps Rym's overwhelming strength is abundantly clear, however, as all four (Sango, Talreed, Gousen, Salt) fall to Rym on his own. Sango and Chamo are taken away shortly after, as no one's there to prevent their capture. Salt's fallen in every single major battle that's taken place thus far, outside of the one with Kaguya. His failure to put a stop to the killer android leaves Sango to be taken away, where she's likely to be sacrificed for some heinous purpose. Being beaten to the brink of mortal wounds, Salt is taken to a hospital for emergency care, after that point in time. Rosemary is missing, and the city is now in a state of despair and panic in the face of this heavy loss. They managed to drive back some of the forces, but that had only left them to be weakened and being unable to stop the remnants from doing as they pleased.

Before, he simply wished to grow stronger to solely improve his abilities, but after the most bitter of all failures, he's come to realize what it was he fought for. He's willing to throw his life down for those within Oasis, and he's more determined than ever to amass the power to smite those who continually stomp upon his city and ideals. While Oasis has relied upon sheer numbers, even that bit is no longer a match against these opponents that only seem to grow increasingly stronger with each meeting. What the city needs now is a beacon of Hope, and Salt intends to do what it takes to reclaim what is lost, by any means.
