  1. The next morning, as soon as it was light. King Arthur,
  2. who was weighed down by many burdens, took a hundred
  3. knights and had them armed, and he had a horsedrawn
  4. litter prepared, and he had the body of Sir Gawain placed
  5. in it. And he said to them, “Take my nephew to Camelot
  6. for me, and have him buried there, as he requested, and
  7. placed in Gaheriet’s tomb. ”
  8. -
  9. “Sir,” they said, “don’t despair, but ride confidently,
  10. for you can see Mordred charging at full speed. Have no
  11. fear, because fear can’t benefit us or you.” Then the king’s
  12. standard was brought up, and a hundred or more knights
  13. were assigned to guard it.
  14. -
  15. Knights on both sides drew their swords and struck
  16. with all their power and killed as many of their adversaries
  17. as possible. King Arthur’s men, who were guarding the
  18. standard, performed so well in this encounter that all
  19. except twenty of Mordred’s four hundred knights were
  20. killed and hacked to pieces before the hour of nones. If
  21. you had been on the battlefield then, you would have seen
  22. the ground littered with the dead and a great many
  23. wounded.
  24. A little after the hour of nones, the battle had been
  25. concluded in such fashion that of all those who were
  26. gathered on the plain—and there had been more than one
  27. hundred thousand—no more than three hundred now
  28. remained alive. All the knights of the Round Table had
  29. been killed except four, for they had thrown caution to the
  30. wind when they saw how desperate matters were.
  31.
  32. -
  33.
  34. When Arthur’s men saw the king on the ground, they
  35. were so enraged that the human heart could not
  36. comprehend their pain. They said, “Oh, God, why do you
  37. permit this battle?” Then they charged at Mordred’s men,
  38. and they at them, and the deadly struggle resumed. As a
  39. result, before the hour of vespers, all of them were killed
  40. except Lucan the Wine Steward and Girflet.
