- p. 21 exercise 5 - Take turns choosing sentence (a) or (b) and responding with the correct response.
- ---
- At the end of the word, we usually don’t release stops (p/t/k/b/d/g), so it can be harder to hear whether they’re voiced or not.
- Fortunately, there is a second common difference in pronunciation that can help you: vowels are usually longer (and more open) when followed by voiced consonants.
- This difference continues even if the consonants are pronounced the same:
- writing / riding - The ‘t’ and ‘d’ are both flapped, but the pronunciation of the ‘i’ is different.
- ---
- p. 22 exercise 6A - listen and repeat the pairs of words. Pay close attention to how you pronounce the vowel.
- exercise 6B - Say the sentence with one of the words. Your partner identifies which word you said.
- ---
- p. 23 exercise 8 - There are several pairs of words that are spelled the same but prounounced differently, with the only difference being the voicing of the final consonant.
- close, use/excuse/abuse/house - The voiced /z/ endings are all verbs, the voiceless /s/ endings are nouns or adjectives.
