- I woke up, and found myself chained into a chair, naked, alone in this room, with dim lights. Something that I think is a black mirror is in front of me. I can feel that there are many wires and tubes attached to me in many areas in my body.
- FLASH! The mirror began to light up. It's a screen, my bad. Wait, is that... him?
- "Ahem!", a high-pitched voice spoke from the screen. "Welcome to this fine day, Unit S0741 of Special Care Unit for the Genetically Damned. I don't think I need to introduce myself, you should already know me." Oh, Doctor. I know you so well. You were the one who placed me in Special Care after my Aptitude Test, and gave me so much hope of being able to serve My Queens one day. You told me that a long time ago.
- "It's a good thing that I was nearby when you were 'bragging' to the Chief Engineer about making an 'invention'. I have to be honest with you, your idea was not original, but those who laughed at you were really in their crazies as well. That wasn't some 'bread', it's a rifle!", the Doctor continued. "Dear Grineer, your bravery is outstanding, but your brain really needs improvement."
- "Why am I here, Doctor? What is happening?", I asked.
- "I am giving you a second chance in life. You will undergo a process that will help you be the Grineer you wanted to be.", the Doctor flipped a switch.
- I can feel a surge of electricity within me. It's painful, and... excruciating. I want to break free, but if this is something I can do to please My Queens, then I have to stay put, and endure.
- "You will be the greatest of my work! Take it all in, Grineer! Take it all in!"
- I can't keep up. I can feel my head numbing... expanding... what is happening to me?
- CRACK! I felt all the pain from my body and my head fade away. I opened my eyes, to see the room covered in... black stuff. Soot, I think. I panicked and tried to look behind me, if the machine is still running.
- "The machine is fine, Unit S0741. But look at you! Phase 1 of your transformation was successful! Assistant, you will move our dear Grineer here", A female person entered the room, and proceeded to move my chair. We were passing through a long hallway when she talked to me.
- "Are you okay?"
- "I don't know.", I replied. "It was an arduous thing to endure, being shocked."
- "We didn't shock you."
- My jaw dropped. "What?"
- "We administered an experimental serum to you, straight from the Sealabs of Uranus. If you felt like you were being shocked, it worked."
- "What was that soot all over the room?"
- "It's a by-product from the machine that administered the serum to you."
- "What will this do to me?"
- "I will tell you soon, but you need to relax, and endure the next Phase for it to be complete."
- We soon entered a large hall, which I think was a practice hall.
- "Phase 2 will be the 'counterweight' for this procedure. A battle re-training phase!", the Doctor exclaimed from the monitor above me. The assistant handed a weapon to me.
- "Standard issue pistol. Crafted from Weapons Production. Heavy, yet accurate. A trusty sidearm." I looked at the weapon, and felt the metal touch my skin. This is a nice weapon to wield.
- "Now, Shoot the targets.", she pointed behind me. It was a wall with a hole, for target practice, I suppose. POP! A target appeared, and a blaring sound was heard. I began to aim the target with this heavy pistol. They said that I aim so poorly during my Test, so I don't think I can do this. I fire the weapon. A click of the trigger fires two bullets.
- TING! I hit it, I hit it! I'm not getting a zero in this test! I fired at the next target.
- TING! I feel like my aiming is getting more and more better with each target I hit, the more faster the next targets appear. I tried to keep up, and it seems I'm getting the hang of it.
- "Move! Move! Move!", the Doctor on the screen exclaimed, as the wall before me went down. I ran through the obstacle course, hitting targets, and finishing at the other side of the area. The assistant was already there.
- "Good work! Results are stellar, unlike the other ones~"
- "Wait, there are other ones who went with this process?"
- "Yes, of course", she told me as she filled out a form from her device. "You are the 28th Grineer to undergo this. And the first who passed. Congratulations!"
- "Where's the Doctor?", I asked.
- "Umm, he went out, I think."
- "Now what will I be doing?", I asked. She gestured to follow her to another long hallway.
- "What's your name again?", she asked me.
- "Unit S0741."
- "Hmm, not that. I meant, your name, not your unit number."
- "I don't have one."
- "Well, let's see... You could go with 'Sotak'. Based on your unit number."
- I thought that it sounded nice, so I nodded.
- "Okay, Sotak. You asked about the serum, so I am letting you know what will happen to you.", she stopped walking, and grabbed my shoulders, and turned them towards her.
- "The serum is a genetic fluid that aims to correct flaws and degradations after the cloning process. It was invented and researched by the Mad Scientist aboard the sealabs. It was the 28th version of the serum, and it worked. The Meridian will be prou~"
- "Steel Meridian?! You're with them?!" I brushed her hands off my shoulders.
- "Calm down, now. You were about to be slaughtered for the Ghouls, and I rescued you."
- "Is the Doctor... on your side?"
- "No, the figure you saw was an accomplice. Also, no, the Mad Scientist doesn't know that we stole the serum."
- "WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS TO ME?", I snapped and aimed the weapon I still have in my person. Squarely at her. She held her hands up.
- "Wait, just so you know. You're already being hunted on this ship by your former Grineer friends. They will tear you apart and the progress you have gained now will be lost."
- "The Queens will be proud of me if I don't let you go!"
- "They don't care about you! You were about to be fed to the ghouls before I snapped you out of that dark place, and gave you another lease in life. Consider that, please."
- "I don't care that much about myself!", I said as I placed my fingers on the trigger. The Queens were such shining jewels, but I also... despise them. Serving them is great, but I will remain a slave forever if I did.
- "But I... I want to be free.", so, I adjusted my aim, and pulled the trigger. BANG! It hit that soldier who was trying to sneak up on us. The assistant let out a breath of what I can tell is of pure relief.
- "Seems your mind is improving.", she said. I lowered my pistol, and smiled at her. "We should escape this place, umm, what's your name again?", I asked.
- "Ymeks. Of Steel Meridian. Sotak, our escape ship is nearby. We should hurry."
