Koori Chikage was going through somewhat of a rough time. After the girls calling themselves Sentinels and their accompanying Miko were summoned to the Shinju-sama's world, the fights against the Vertexes became even safer and easier. However, Chikage's problems in daily life only seemed to increase. And the reason for that was none other than...
"Chikage-san! Might I request a moment of your time?"
The blonde-haired girl calling out to her, Miroku Yumiko.
As soon as she found out Chikage, one of the original Heroes, was born in Kouchi, Yumiko's eyes glimmered.
"I am greatly honoured to be in a presence of someone as esteemed as you! To think there was a Hero to come from Kouchi, and such a stellar one at that! Fufufu, it can be naught but fate that the Miroku family came to be as glorious as it is!"
And ever since, Yumiko kept making attempts to initiate conversations with Chikage. And the latter was hardly pleased about that.
(Annoying.)
Chikage tried to brush her off. However, no matter what she tried, Yumiko wouldn't stop. She kept coming to initiate small talk.
(An eyesore. Is she trying to be friendly with me? Why doesn't she understand I don't need her company? Why doesn't she just give up?)
"Ah, I finally caught up. You certainly are quick on your feet, Chikage-san. Now, would you mind if we, as both third years and Kouchi residents, had a little chat? The liberation of our home prefectures draws ever closer, after all! Have you heard the latest strategy plan?"
(Kouchi. That loathsome word again. And that constant look of confidence, without a shred of self-doubt on her face. Repulsive. Obnoxious. I couldn't stand it.)
Chikage decided that time for subtleties was over. Today she'd finally drive the girl away from her. Chikage began speaking in a high voice.
"Miroku-san, would you please stop bothering me? You're a nuisance. And can you stop bringing Kouchi up all the time!? I don't want to think about that place! I hate it!"
Those words were not part of Chikage's plan, but she couldn't stop them from pouring out. Her feelings boiled over and oveflowed.
"Do you have any idea how cruel the people of Kouchi can be!? Why would I be happy even about going there, let alone liberating it!? But of course, what would someone like you ever know!?"
(...I might've went overboard. Damn this girl, why did I speak about it?)
Chikage looked at Yumiko's face with clenched teeth, and then her eyes widened in surprise. She expected to see an expression of shock and confusion. Possibly a face offended by suddenly being yelled at. But the expression in front of her was neither of those.
"...How cruel the people of Kouchi can be, you say?.."
Yumiko's usual confident face was nowhere to be found. In its place was a sorrowful look that emanated compassion and understanding.
(Hmph. Just look at those Mirokus. Disgraceful as always. It's a wonder they're still allowed to stay affliated to the Taisha.)
(The descendants of "saviours", huh. I'm willing to bet the Akamine family did all of the work back then. These leeches must've simply latched onto the glory.)
(Just imagining their name standing next to the Akamine family on the Great Bridge in Kagawa makes me feel nauseous. Let us thank Shinju-sama for not letting that happen.)
Yumiko forced out a pained smile.
"I happen to be more aware of the extent of it than you would probably be inclined to be believe, truth be told."
And she was right, Chikage wasn't willing to believe her ears. But she could believe her eyes. And the look in the blonde girl's eyes seemed oddly familiar to her.
"But even so, is that not precisely the reason why we should persist? To show them how wrong they were, to make them eat their words. Would you not agree with me, Chikage-san?"
"Ah... Yeah. You're right. And, Miroku-san. I'm sorry for having acted like this all this time."
"Oh, that is of no concern. I might have been ever so slightly too forceful. After all, few can stay calm in the presence of someone as blindingly brilliant as myself! Now, let us go. I know a restaurant that serves skipjack tuna nearby, it and it also happens to be rather inexpe... inexplicably delicious for skipjack tuna sold outside of Kouchi! It should prove to be just the right environnment for a leisurely chat."
(She really is annoying.)
Chikage let out a light smile.
