Grettir - Clings to sword in death

Now they turned back to Grettir, who had fallen forward. No fight was lift in him; he was already at the point of death from the wound in his leg. THe thigh had festered all the way up into his intestines. They gave him many wounds, but there was little or no bleeding. When they thought he must be dead, Hook reached for the sax, saying that Grettir had carried it long enough. But Grettir had locked his fingers tightly around the handle and held the sword fast. Many of the men attempted to loosen it, but none could. Eight of them tried before it was over, and all without success.
