- Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford continues to make headlines ahead of the launch of Borderlands 3 in under a month, and his presence in the news remains a largely negative one that's surely affecting perception of the upcoming game by now. Pitchford has infamously been involved in a number of scandals in 2019 alone, with it only taking around a week into the year before the first story broke about Pitchford's messy lawsuit with former Gearbox general counsel Wade Callender. Callender alleges that Pitchford took a secret $12 million bonus in 2016 among other concerning practices.
- If that was the end of the negativity swirling around Pitchford, then Gearbox would be in a much better place as a result. Unfortunately, controversy began 2019 targeting the Gearbox boss and has spent the rest of the year finding him repeatedly. Depending upon who is asked, Pitchford either blatantly lied about Borderlands 3 microtransactions or was misinterpreted when he misspoke about the term during a live presentation. According to former Claptrap voice actor David Eddings, Gearbox refused to pay him for his work and, much more seriously, Pitchford allegedly physically assaulted him at a previous juncture. Borderlands 3 will also continue to retain the services of Chris Hardwick, who has been accused of sexual misconduct and whose presence makes many fans uncomfortable with the game.

- Perhaps it will come as a relief then that the latest in Gearbox and Pitchford's rocky 2019 is "just" about the company allegedly finding itself in contempt for failing to produce court-ordered documents. According to a report from GameSpot, Callender has filed a motion in Dallas County (Texas) district court and request sanctions against Gearbox. According to the most recent filing, "Callender believes he can prove that [Gearbox], and their lawyers, continue to violate this Court's order and hide documents." If Callender can, it could spell serious trouble for the studio and Pitchford.

- Apparently, the sanction request from Callender comes as a result of back-and-forth disputes that have spanned most of the year. Callender has been attempting to get cooperation out of Gearbox for months, with the company allegedly requesting for extensions and relief in response. When documents are received, such as the one-page document Callender received after serving Gearbox with a set of eight interrogatories back in February, they are allegedly deficient. It's a messy legal battle that doesn't appear to have an end in sight, although these issues cropping up repeatedly ahead of the launch of Borderlands 3 has definitely dimmed the spotlight on the game somewhat.
- It will be interesting to see how the community responds to Pitchford's ties to Borderlands 3 as well. It's no secret the Gearbox boss has railed against the allegations swirling around him in 2019 before, with a social media dispute against Game Informer and his former employee David Eddings fresh in everyone's minds. Even when Gearbox is attempting to keep Pitchford out of discussion, as it has seemingly been attempting to do in the weeks leading up to the launch of Borderlands 3, something invariably happens and a new controversial update is provided. Will that matter for the game's sales? Time will tell, but it's certainly not the type of publicity a developer wants heading into the crucial last minute build-up to a major release.
