  1. Why are people so poor at processing criticism of things they liked? I've been reading about the new Star Wars movie, which I posted my thoughts about here: https://pastebin.com/9eAyA5tm
  2.
  3. And the thing that I keep seeing is people who loved the movie completely attempting to shut down all criticism by painting everyone with one brush. Here's a few variations I've seen used to deflect any and all criticism:
  4.
  5. 1. People who made "too many theories" and were upset they weren't true
  6. 2. The Alt-right
  7. 3. Star Wars "purists" (whatever that means in this case)
  8. 4. People who refuse to like anything different
  9. 5. They "don't understand" the "deep themes" (that are very explicitly stated, super obvious, and surface level)
  10.
  11. While I'm certain that there are large amounts of people who fall into these categories, it should be obvious to anyone capable of rational thought that these are not the only groups who are criticizing the film. I wish it would occur to people that maybe sometimes a pretty divisive entry in a series can sometimes mean that there are, in fact, potential problems with that thing.
  12.
  13. That's not to say things that are wildly popular can't also have flaws, they obviously can, but it's just bizarre to me that when opinions seems as split as they seem to be with The Last Jedi that even still people can manage to dismiss criticism outright.
  14.
  15. It's the type of "meta-complaining" that is just the worst. Shutting down active discussions via a dismissal of criticism instead of a discussion about what worked and what didn't is just blind fanboyism.
  16.
  17. Obviously, people dismissing the movie entirely are guilty of the same thing, but from what I've seen they're a much smaller minority than the people who try to dismiss all criticism.
  18.
  19. Please don't be one of these people, thanks.
